Day 3

"Good morning young counselors, good morning," Bob sings, coming into the guys' cabin, strumming on his guitar.

"Ugh," Joey says, rolling over, pulling the pillow over his head. 'I forgot about this traditional wake up call.'

Jason opens his eyes and quickly shuts them as he sees all the sunlight that pouring in through the windows. 'Day three,' he thinks as he manages to sit up and slowly get going to get ready for the day. He looks into his bag and decides to pull out swim trunks and a tank top since he and Kassie would be working on the boats and docks today after the morning meetings. After he is done changing and getting himself ready for breakfast, he approaches his twin's bed and yanks the pillow off his head. "Morning sunshine!"

"Ugh," Joey responds. "Jason, get a life and leave me to sleep!"

"Sorry, no can do. We have to get to breakfast now!"

"Go ahead. I'm going to skip. Not hungry."

"Fine, your loss when you get hungry in a few hours and there's nothing to eat," Jason says, leaving the cabin and walking to the dining hall. He picks up a tray and loads his plate with food then sits down next to Vince and Tyler, seeing that all the other tables were full. "Morning," he says, sliding into his seat.

"Morning," Vince replies. "Jason, right?"

"Right."

"Cool. Where's your brother?"

"Sleeping in as usual."

Vince chuckles. "So do you know the plans for today?"

"We're going to have a morning meeting and then we'll be sent to start preparing for the classes we will be having for the campers. It'll be a long day but at least tonight will be a free evening."

"Meaning?" Tyler asks.

"Meaning that we can go into town or just hang out around here."

"Cool," Vince says, munching on his toast. "Do you have plans then? I mean it's our first chance to scam on the girls."

Tyler rolls his eyes. "Not everything is based on scamming on girls you know."

"Right. Maybe all the guys could just hang out and have an all male bonding night while the girls go out on the town and have lots of fun with the local guys."

Jason shakes his head. "Man, you're head better not be all about those girls or Kathy will have you out of here so fast. She has low tolerance for people that put their own needs before others, especially the campers."

"No worries Jason. That's why I want to scam now. The campers aren't here yet. Besides, I want to have some fun!"

All three guys laugh and begin to plan out what they could do after all their duties were done.

After the morning meeting, Kassandra finds herself walking towards the docks where she was going to meet Jason to start working on the boats. "Kassandra!" She turns around when she hears Seth call out her name.

"Hey Seth. What's up?" she asks, continuing to walk as he falls into pace with her.

"Listen, I know we have this free time tonight. I was wondering if you'd be kind enough to show me the town. I'd go on my own but I thought it would be more interesting if I had someone to go with," he manages to stumble out.

After a moment of surprise, Kassandra says, "Sure Seth. I'd love to go into town with you. We could get dinner there if you want."

"Great! Should I pick you up from your cabin around five then? You should be done by then right?"

"I should be. Hopefully, the boats aren't too bad this year."

"Sounds good. I guess I'll see you then?"

"Yup," Kassandra returns, continuing to walk through the woods to the docks while Seth runs off to his destination. Once there, Kassandra takes a seat at the edge of the dock, taking off her shoes to enable her to dangle her feet in the water. 'I can't believe this is going to be the last summer.'

A few moments later, she hears someone step onto the dock and walk towards her. "Afternoon Kassie," Jason says with a smile. He takes off his shoes and sits down next to her. "How was your morning session?"

"Productive. And you?"

"Good. It's hard to imagine that after spending almost all of our lives here that we'll never see this place again."

"I know, I was just thinking that. It's going to be hard to say good-bye to you guys, especially because you never keep in touch!"

"I promise I will, for sure this time. Do you have plans for tonight or tomorrow?"

"Actually, I told Seth I'd show him around town. Tomorrow is still up in the air though."

"Well maybe we can get the old gang together and follow tradition," Jason says with a mischievous look.

"Tradition? Oh no," Kassandra replies. "I will agree but only if you and Joey promise not to dump me into the water with all my clothes on again. That was a mess last time."

"All right, I promise on both of our behalves."

"Good. Then count me in. I'll check with May. Did you want to invite anyone else? Perhaps Tyler?"

"Tyler? Are you interested in him?"

"No, but I think someone I know is."

Jason laughs. "Sure, we can play matchmaker. We can bring whoever wants to go. It'll be fun."

"Sounds like a plan then."

"Then it's all set. Leave in the morning?"

"After breakfast," Kassandra says, nodding her head. "I'm excited now!"

"Well I'm glad. We better get working on those boats to make sure you're ready for your little date tonight."

Kassandra rolls her eyes. "You're never going to stop teasing me are you?"

"Do you want me to?"

After laughing, she replies, "No, for some reason I think I have gotten used to it and expect it. It would seem too odd for you to stop now."

"Well then," he says, getting up and giving her a hand up. "Let's go find those boats!"

The two pull the boats out of storage and manage to put them up to examine them. "These aren't in too bad shape actually Jason," Kassandra says, circling the boats.

"Just a bit of sanding, patching, and painting. Not too bad. I was expecting to be here forever to tell you the truth."

The two quickly get to work, chatting here and there until they were able to stand back and admire their work a few hours later. "Those look pretty good. We just need to let it sit there and let it dry. It should be all set when we come back to clean up the rest of this area."

"No rain expected, right?" Kassandra asks.

"Not a single drop. Do you want to go into the water with me to check on the dock or do you have to go?"

Kassandra checks her watch. "I have enough time to take care of the docks with you. I would never let you do this job alone. You know that."

Jason smiles. "I know."

The two strip down to their bathing suits and walk into the cold, ocean water. The two wade in deeper and swim until they are at the end of the dock. They put their snorkel masks on, take a deep breath in, and swim underneath to look at how everything is holding up. After fully examining the dock and finding it satisfactory, Jason surfaces with Kassandra next to him, pulling her hair out of her face. "Looks good."

"I agree," she says, taking in a deep breath. "It feels nice to be in this water again."

"I second that. So do you like this Seth guy?"

"Jason! I just met him! I'm just showing him around town, honestly."

"Well you know me. I've always been so cautious with the guys you date. I want to make sure they are really worthy of my lil sis."

Kassandra laughs. "I'm not so little anymore. Besides, how are you doing with Valerie? That's her name right?"

A sad look crosses his face. "We broke up a while ago."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Kassandra says, shocked by the words. "I thought you two would be together forever. You seemed so happy last summer."

"Well, let's just say, she did a bad thing and it resulted in our split."

"Okay," she says, not wanting to push.

"I guess I'm a little hard on you and this guy because I don't want to see you get hurt like I did. It sucks being heartbroken."

"Oh Jason," Kassandra says, swimming over to him to give him an awkward hug since they were both treading water.

A few tears slip from Jason's eyes, which he ignores, hoping Kassie wouldn't be able to tell he was crying since he was wet anyway. He pulls back and sinks into the water for a moment after she releases him from the hug. After resurfacing, he sees her looking at him sympathetically. "It's okay, really Kassie. I don't need your sympathy. I just needed to learn a lesson, that's all. Valerie taught it to me all right. I don't think I'll trust another girl again."

"You will," Kassandra says with confidence. "You're a wonderful guy Jason. You'll meet the girl that will change that and all will be well in your world once again."

"Maybe," he says. He looks down at his watch and looks back up at her. "You better go. You're going to be late if you stay any longer here with me."

"No, I want to stay. If you need me, you know you always come first."

"I'm fine, honestly Kassie. Go have fun tonight. We'll have time to talk tomorrow if you want."

Kassandra nods her head. "Okay. I guess I'll see you later then."

"Right."

Kassandra swims to shore and picks up her towel, turning around to wave good-bye to Jason and runs off into the words to get ready for the night.

"So, are we going to watch the girly romantic flick or the action movie?" Vince asks, looking at the rest of the group. Jason, Joey, Vicky, Maya, and Allison look at the boards.

"Wait! This sucks! We can't see the romantic movie because it already started!" whines Maya.

"Oh, guess it's the action movie then!" Joey exclaims, happy to not have to watch the other movie.

The girls groan but put down their money for their ticket into the theater. The group walks in and gets some popcorn, candy and soda for all of them to share before making their way into the still lit theater. After filing in, they sit down.

"Hey Jason, you better share that licorice!" Joey yells from the other end of the row.

Jason shakes his head. "If you wanted some, you should have gotten some for yourself!"

"Boys, quiet down!" Allison says, looking around, afraid they would get in trouble with all the noise they were making. "There are other people here."

"The movie hasn't even started. Just chill," Maya says, smiling at Jason. "I think that brotherly arguing is kind of cute."

Jason smiles back at her, but then turns his attention to Vicky who is inquiring to find out what the movie is about.

"So Joey, what are you doing later tonight?" Maya asks.

Joey smirks. "Wouldn't you like to know?"

"He's hanging with me. You're welcome to join us boys after the movie if you want," Vince says, giving her a flirtatious smile.

"Sounds like a plan hot stuff."

Vince smiles even wider at that, but turns his attention to the screen as the lights dim and the previews begin. Vince chuckles as he feels Maya's hand "accidentally" brush up against his leg. 'This is going to be one killer summer all right,' he thinks, throwing her a smile before focusing once again on the screen.

An hour and fifty minutes later, the group files out and walks through the lobby outside, following a couple that Vicky notes looks familiar. When she is about to say something, she hears Vince ask, "Isn't that Kassie and Seth?"

The group turns their attention on the couple that is walking further down the street and end up walking behind them again. They hear laughter and see the couple stop at the stoplight. The guy brings his hand up to the girl's face and leans down to kiss her softly, which she seems to not mind at all.

"That can't be her," Jason says.

"Looks like it to me man," Vince says. "Man, Seth worked his mojo on her awfully fast!"

"Are you sure?" Joey asks. "I didn't even know the two were going out on their own tonight."

"They must have seen the romantic movie! What a gentleman," Allison says, smiling at the couple.

"Whatever. Can we go to the pool hall now?" Maya asks, annoyed that the boys were making a fuss over Kassandra.

"Sure babe," Vince says, wrapping an arm around her waist, taking the lead of the group to walk down the rest of the block and turning right onto the next street where the pool hall was.

'What is she doing with him?' Joey wonders. 'Had I known she was going to date this soon, I would have beaten the bastard.'

Allison looks at the twins and notices that both are deep in thought. 'This could prove to be an interesting summer,' she thinks as she continues to walk alongside Jason, who is walking in silence but with a thoughtful look on his face. 'Maybe the campers won't be the drama of my life here. Yes, this is going to be a long, fun, and exciting summer.'
