Literature Recommendations

Works for clarinet and orchestra include concertos by Busoni, Copeland, Debussy, Hindemith, Mozart, Nielsen, Spohr, Wanhal, Stamitz and Weber; there are sonatas with piano by Berg, Bernstein, Brahms (2), Childs, Debussy, Hindemith, Martinu, Poulenc, Reger (3), Saint-Saens, Schumann, Ward-Steinman; chamber works inculde trios by Bartok, Beethoven, Brahms, Stravinsky, and Mozart; string quintets by Mozart and Brahms; and a host of miscellaneous ensemble pieces by Beethoven, Cart, Milhaud, Mozart, Piston, Sydeman and many others. There are also major solo wroks such as the Stravinsky Three Pieces and the Martino Set, as well as an interesting new repertory for clarinet and tape. Complete methods, in addition to the Rubank beginning materials, include Klose's Celebrated Method, Thurston's The Clarinet, and Study Materials for Clarinet, Rehfeldt. Etudes, such as Polatschek's 12 Etudes, Thurston's Passage Studies, Rose's 32 Studies, Uhl's 48 Studies, and Baermann's Third Division are also commonly used (in the approximate difficulty chronology as listed.) There is an eight volume orchestral excerpt collection published by International, and an extensive repertory listing is available by Wayne Wilkins, The Index of Clarinet Music (The Music Register, Magnolia, Arkansas).
