Iceland 2001

So many people ask "Why Iceland?" and many people will never understand. All they see is an island on the edge of the Artic circle and think it's cold and dark. I even have some ignorant friends who insist that there are polar bears in Iceland. All this misinformation. Such a shame! So I hope that my little website can give some insight into this amazing country and how valuable and rich it is in its cultural history and literature.

I will add more to this site now that I have a scanner.  For now, here are some pictures from my trip.

This is Eiriksstadir where Eirik the Red lived until he had to leave Iceland "on account of some killings." He then went to Greenland and started a colony there. The house is obviously not his original house. It is a replication to show tourists what a medieval house in Iceland looked like. Here is where the original house actually stood. Notice the grooves in the grass. That is from the past excavation and you can make out the outlines of the base of the house.

Since we're on the topic of excavation sites, here is one from the center of Reykjavik. Some claim that this is the site of the first settler, Ingolfur Arnason, but it can't be proven and it's most likely just named that to attract tourists. There are four houses in this excavation site but this is just of the main one.

Until I work on this site more and have more of an order, I'll do my best. So since we're talking abour Reykjavik, how about a view of the skyline?

Ok so that wasn't the picture I thought it was but it will do for now. Pretty city isn't it? It's all those colorful roofs. I believe the mountain in the background is Mount Esa. But I could be wrong. Let me check for you.

Ok well that is all I'm going to do tonight. Come back later when I have my act together!

Go back! 1
