Why I chose Smith:

So it was my freshman year of highschool and everyone started asking where I wanted to go to college. Well like most freshman, I hadn't put any thought into it. I mean, after all I had just started high school. At the time, my favorite author was Cynthia Voigt and so upon the millionth time of being asked where I wanted to go, I ran up to my room, pulled out one of her books and looked in the about the author section. She went to Smith College. So I'm like "yeah I want to go to Smith college." My dad then got a Barrons book on colleges and I sadly discovered that Smith was an all female school. That ALMOST changed my mind completely. Being a first born who has to have everything in a neat little package, I started college searching early on and visited Smith the summer after my freshman year. The moment I got there, I fell in love with it. First off, the campus was beautiful and the tour guide, Ruth, was just amazing. But there was this feeling, like I could be happy here and belong here that made Smith my #1 choice. I won't mention which other colleges I saw that summer as to not discourage you from making your own decision, but Smith definetly came in first. In my junior year of high school, I completely changed my future career plans and had to do another college search. I went back to Smith and spent a weekend and did some more research to make sure Smith would still fit my changing needs. I stayed in Ziskind House - one of the less attractive houses on campus but everyone there was so friendly and eager to take me around and take me to classes. One girl took me to a german class on the Germans in Advertisements or something like that and the teacher was absolutely amazing. It was so interesting that I took Beginning German my first year at Smith. So Smith became my first choice and I applied Early Decision and to my happiness, I got accepted. All the hard work I had put in had paid off.

My advice to you:

Visit as many schools as you can. Keep an open mind. Then just feel. You already did all the research and paper work in some book about colleges. You already know the college will meet your academic needs. Now just take the tour and the visit - with time to spare! Spend some time just wandering on campus. Ask yourself if you'll be happy there and if it suits you. Use your 6th sense - that gut instinct - and don't go against it. Smith may not be the perfect school for you but this advice holds true for all the schools you look at. At Smith: Can you picture yourself doing homework with friends on Seeyle Lawn? Can you picture yourself with all your screaming classmates during convocation in JMG Hall? Can you picture yourself living in the dorms and creating your own circle of friends? [the dorms are more like houses]

At Smith you will see the use of at least 90% of your tuition money. Yeah it's expensive but they spend it on you! New buildings, dorm renovations, new staff members to keep your class size small, numerous resources and information centers re: study abroad, career development, free counseling etc. But nothing beats the Resident and Dining Service Staff. They are just great and amazing and make decent food too! We appreciate them greatly!!! In any event, Smith has a lot to offer so take advantage of it all! Join clubs! Make a statement! Get the most out of your education and you will be rewarded.
