England is a Constitutional Monarchy which is headed by Queen Elizabeth II.The Monarchy is the oldest institution of government, dating back to the Dark Ages. It existed centuries before Parliament. The only interruption in the history of the Monarchy was when the country was a republic between 1649 and 1660. The Queen is descended from the Anglo-Saxon kings of Wessex.The British Royal Family:
Although the English monarchy has had a long, rich traditional past, the Monarchy's absolute power has been progressively reduced over the centuries, but the Monarch still retains a significant constitutional role as Head of State.
England's monarchy dates back to 802 when Egbert, the first known king, and the Saxon Danes ruled England. Throughout England's long history as a nation, its kings and queens have been widly known and loved. Although loyalty was high for most kings, England's monarchy has had its share of rough times. During the regin of Charles I (1625-1649), for example, the English monarchy lost much favor with the masses. And although the throne was returned to the family, problems have not always escaped these chosen people.
During modern times the British Royal Family has gone through many unfortunate events. From affairs to the death of Diana, the English Royal Family has had some great blows to its character. Although these problems have nearly rocked the throne to its very foundation, its absoloute disolution is unlikly due to new generations, such as those of Prince William & Prince Henry's, growing up, faith in the Royal Family is recindling.
