Tom kept asking me if I was ok, and I could only nod, as we made our way out of the terminal, and back to the motel. I missed my "forever friend" already. We were exhausted, slept soundly, and started our trip home early on October 4th, Sunday. Tom knew the route well, and with a flash of my lights, would stop at the next exit for gas, or dinner. He had taken a good portion of my loaded car in his, and thank goodness for that! The mountains we had to go through were actually very long, upward grades, and fully loaded, I never would have made it. At one gas stop, we were kissing as the cars filled and our eyes poppped open as we heard this voice floating in the air "Awwwwwww how sweet, do that again". The gal in the station was on the loud speaker announcing our actions to everyone. We laughed, complied with her wishes and continued on our way.
My introduction to the expressway came at night. Five lanes of traffice whizzed by me on both sides, while Tom, opened the lanes for me at breakneck speed. He played "frogger" like a pro. I hit the gas, gripped the wheel and waited for the "splat", I was sure that was going to happen to me. I found that the other drivers were convinced I was a nut because I kept stepping on the brake, and they would go around me, leaving me quite free of traffic congestion. I suddenly saw Tom's swerve and he was off on an exit, taking the curves like a Nascar driver. Thank God he couldn't hear what I was yelling at him!
We pulled into the apartment complex around 10:00PM that night, and I was furious! "Man, couldn't you go any faster?" I asked sarcastically. He looked completely bewildered! We unloaded the cars, which took another hour, and we finally took a breather.
The apartment was adorable! Tom had only been there for two weeks and had just the basics to get started with, and I was already "mentally nesting". He took Monday off, and we set up tables, went grocery shopping, unpacked suit cases and some boxes. When he went to work on Tuesday, I went through everything, and when he walked through the door that night, aroamtic smells were wafting from the kitchen. He looked around and breathed "Wow!!". Our home was really looking great and being together, finally make the previous month of difficulties worth it!!
The Trip Home (Tom)
We got Sandy off back to Superior, and as we were walking away from the gate, I noticed the sadness in Dee's eyes..we stopped, I hugged her very tight, kissed her..and we continued back to the room, where we both relaxed, and held other very tight. I knew Sandy and Dee were the best of friends, for many years, and it brought a tear to my eye, seeing Sandy head home. I held Dee close to me, the rest of the night, and early in the morning we started our jouney back "home".
After a night's sleep, we started out early from Crawfordsville, the cars were loaded up, ready to roll out. We had transferred a lot of Dee's things to my car, knowing it would help her out on the trip home...a quick check to ensure everything packed up was fine, and we headed out about 7AM that morning. We planned for me to lead the way and Dee would follow behind me. I knew the route very well, back to Virginia, so I told Dee to stay behind me, and I would drive it slower, as not to lose her anywhere.
We had some interesting adventures along the way - a fun little gas stop where we got out, kissed and hugged, and seemed to have a little cheering section with us. It was the attendant that was doing the "awwwwws" asking for more "kisses", so we obliged, it was cute, to say the least! *S* Driving through the mountains of West Virginia and Maryland, in a deep fog, and only seeing Dee in flashes behind me, it was definitely an "adventure" in driving thru the mountains; relaxing at the planned, and unplanned stops along the way, holding Dee in my arms, kissing her, and enjoying the scenery along the way.
I was hoping to hit the D.C. area in some type of twilight, but as must plans go - this went awry *sigh*.. I led Dee on a chase into D.C., pretty well lighted, but I got it into my head, I had to play, as Dee calls it, "frogger" (jumping in and out of lanes...) and for some unknown reason to me, I did it in D.C. Anyway, I was driving the roads like I usually do, in going to work, etc. and Dee was venturing out, her first time in the area, in the dark, and had to be wondering what the heck I was doing. Once I got into Virginia, I think it hit me to stay in one lane till we got to our exit of the beltway. Then the fun started. I took her down an expressway, not all that lighted, and with plenty of turns. I might have been a little too fast as I did not see Dee on a few ocasions, but kept on going, like there was no tomorrow. And finally she got to venture I-95; (thank God it was not a rush hour,) and playing "frogger", Dee must have thought I was nuts at this time, or ummmm some sort of other phrase, which I can not say here.
Well, after "Adventures in Driving", we finally pulled into "our" home at 10PM that night, and I was the happiest man alive, to finally be home, with my lady. She adored the apartment at first glance, and after a couple of relaxing moments in my "bare" apartment, we moved her stuff in and after an hour we were finally moved in. I was off Monday, and we did some shopping to get a few needed things, unpacked boxes, and designed our new apartment, our way, and enjoyed each other in our home, together, never to be separated again.
