Basic facts

Slovenia is a young, small maritime country in the Central Europe and a juncture of three geo-strategic and geo-political areas: Central Europe, Southern Europe and the Adriatic- the Mediterranean. More than half of its 20.273 km² territory is covered by forest and mountains. Mountains (Alps and many hills expanding all over the country), Karst and its caves, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, valleys, thermal and mineral sources, plains and sea, all are easily accessible and very near each other. Besides, Slovenia is home to more than 50,000 animal species and 3,000 plant species.

Four major European geographic regions meet in Slovenia: the Alps, the Dinaric area, the Pannonian plain and the Mediterranean. These differ between themselves mainly by the stoneware, relief, climate and vegetation. More than half of the land (mostly Alps and Dinaric area) is composed by a carboniferous limestone and dolomite. Pannonian hills are made mostly of marl and Mediterranean flysch, and plains are made of clay, sand and gravel.

The climate is Mediterranean on the Coast, Highland in the Alps and Continental in the rest of the country, perfect for skiing and ice-skating in the winter, and for swimming in the warm sea and lakes and mountain hiking in the summer!
