Strunjan: salt fields

Previous | Home | Next

This salt fields are in Strunjan, a popular summer and thermal resort near Piran. The salt fields were made most probably in 13th century and salt producing was a profitable business at that times. Salt from these fields and the salt fields in Sečovelj was transported directly to Habsbourg court in Vienna.
The system of these fields is composed of different fields. Those near the sea are basins in which the sea water warms up, and they are surrounded by canals through which the sea water is transferred to them. Behind these "warming up" basins are the real salt fields. Water from the warming up basins is transferred to these salt fields. When the sea water evaporates from them, workers grab the salt from them.
The salt fields have to be maintained continuously. Especially important is the preparation of the floor or bottom of the salt field, which has to be solid and even in order not to be grabbed together with the salt.
These salt field are, together with those in Sečovelje, the only salts fields still in use.
