The gloriously percussive last movement of Rachmaninov's third piano concerto swelled to its orgiastic climax. Legs spread wide, the lone figure viciously lashed away at his own inner thighs with a short rubber-tailed whip, to a rhythm dictated by the music. Angry welts rapidly appeared.
A single amber spot highlighted a light sheen of sweat on the contestant's nude form, prone on the black bearskin rug at the center of the arena. He gracefully shifted to a kneeling position as Rachmaninov faded seamlessly into Holst in the pre-recorded accompaniment. The capacity Madison Square Garden crowd watched in silence, awed by the sublime artistry of the performance. As the strident brass chords of "Mars" from "The Planets" resonated throughout the cavernous arena, the man was now whipping his back with a "viper" - a flat forked leather punishment instrument not unlike a Scottish tawse, although longer, with the two tails each tapering to a narrow point. Pairs of small welts were appearing, easily visible in the subtly-changing hues of the lighting.
The music changed again, and the performer shifted to a face down position, crashing a heavy paddle against his buttocks to the stomping beat of "Winter" from Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" - an abrupt but effective contrast to the Holst. As this third and longest section of music in turn neared its close, the man's arse by then a deep shade of red, he fluidly changed to a standing position, raised the paddle high above his head, and brought it crashing down with full force onto the front of his thighs just as the last note sounded. An angry red rectangle marked the point of that final impact on the front of each thigh.
He broke out into a broad triumphant smile. The applause was immediate and tumultuous, and continued for some minutes, dying down only as the scores began to come over the P/A system: "Five-nine, five-nine, six, five-nine, five-nine ...". The lowest score, a five-eight, was automatically eliminated.
The event was also of course on live television worldwide. "In the lead after the M/M event," the commentator was saying, "this extraordinary score in Freestyle Solo Spanking puts sswitcher in a virtually unassailable position ahead of next week's mixed doubles contest. In fact it seems safe to say already that sswitcher is assured of a place on the podium, if not the Olympic gold medal in spanking."
