EUROREVIEW

REAL MALLORCA(ESP)-AJAX

...And on Mallorca it all ended...Allready after the 3rd minute. Soler eased through the weak Amsterdam defence and scored 1-0. Ajax could have stand a chance if that goal was not scored. And it seemed to loose all confidence in the game after that early score. All players were weak but it needs to be admit that Mallorca showed a strong playing squad. Laudrup, Knopper, Gronkjaer, Machlas;nobody could make a dreamimpression. Signs of a team desperately searching for some rest. The rest is in the pocket with the major of Enschede forbidding sundays game between FC Twente-Ajax. But still Ajax could not play football to the fullest, it was a little embarassing to see such great stars step down to some unprofessional counterfootball. Biagini overcame Grim in the 73rd minute and scored the final score 2-0. There were only a handfull of half-chances for Ajax.
For the fans there was not even nice wheather and that makes this thursday in December a day to forget as soon as possible. Ajax knocked out of UEFA-cup in third round, deserved! Over and out!
Note for Ajax: 4

Other Dutch teams in European Cups:
The club from Rotterdam was succesfull and impressive at home where they beat Olympique Marseille, 3-0. In the 7th minute captain v.Wonderen was sent off but still Feyenoord put pressure on Olympique Marseille. But when the red card hit Olympique Marseille twice, Feyenoord took the game and scored three times, to win with 3-0. Cruz scored twice and with 5 goals in the last 2 games, he must gain a lot of confidence. So after this win, Feyenoord will play again in February against Lazio Roma, and that is no Marseille, I am sure they will notice that.

Moment of the week:
My interest for an Ajaxgame has never been so low. It was to be expected that Ajax would loose, but a nice thing was that the Germans had a lot of problems. Only Werder Bremen eased through in the UEFA-Cup, Bayer Leverkusen, Vfl Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund all stranded in the 3rd round and it is nice to know that they will finally be quiet for a while...Also the draw of the Netherlands for Qualifying 2002 was a lucky draw. Netherlands is in the same group with Portugal,Ireland,Estonia,Cyprus and Andorra. So maybe, just maybe we are still able to qualify ourselves, cause even the Holland in the form of this moment can win in this group.

Willem ter Haar
(congratulates Mallorca like a true sport for a welldeserved win)
