JROTC is a program set up by the United States government in order to train future leaders. JROTC units can be found all over the USA, and also in Italy and Japan.
This particular unit is an NJROTC unit, or Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp, as opposed to an Army, Air Force, or Marine JROTC unit. It is now a company, with almost 150 cadets in the unit.
One of the purposes of JROTC is to give young men and women a taste of the military. There are various military groups within the unit, such as Drill Team, Color Guard, and an athletic team. Cadets are expected to wear a specified uniform at least once a week, and they must learn military protocol and etiquette.
Other purposes include instilling a sense of discipline, respect for others, efficiency, and leadership skills. There are many opportunities in the unit for leadership skills to be honed and developed, such as the various job positions. Cadets learn to be responsible and disciplined while taking part in fun activities such as field trips, sea cruises, and drill. They learn to respect teachers and higher ranking individuals, even if they may not be the best of friends.
Of course, that is not all JROTC offers to those willing to partake in the experience. If you are interested in joining the military, but are not quite sure if you should, being in JROTC can help you in your choice. Qualified individuals may also recieve NROTC scholarships or even an appointment to a military academy upon their completion of the four year program.
