The Mikoyan MiG-23 'Foxbat'

The Soviet Union's fastest Interceptor

The MiG-25 'Foxbat'
MiG-23 'Foxbat' From Richard J. Longchamp's Aviation Archive

The Mikoyan MiG-25 'Foxbat' can achieve speed of mach 3+, and can fly almost into space. This plane was designed to counter the never produced North American XB-70 'Valkeryie' this incredible bomber could fly faster than any SAM and as such the Soviet Union had no way of shooting down. The MiG-23 'Flogger' could simply not fly fast enough or high enough. The MiG-25 is build for speed, its two massive Tumansky engines were designed for the MiG-25. Contrary to western belief the MiG-25 was made of mostly stainless steel, the CIA anticipated that the MiG-25 would be made out of titanium. The MiG-25 'Foxbat' caused the Americans to build a counter and as such they created one of the best fighters of all time the McDonnell Douglas F-15 'Eagle'. After the cancellation of the XB-70 the 'Foxbat' was mostly put into reconnaissance service that is the MiG-25 'Foxbat C'. An improved interceptor is the MiG-25 'Foxbat PM'.
