I am an Army veteran having served during
the time period of March 1965 till February 1968. Although
I watched the Vietnam War from Europe I was none the less
very involved as high school friends and classmates slugged
it out with the VC. What I was reading in the Stars and
Stripes was totally different than what I was being told by
those whose journey had taken them to the war and then
through my company.
Initially I was suspect that not all POWs had been
returned during Operation Homecoming. The near simultaneous
announcement, by our government, that all non-returning
POWs were dead seem just too quick. How did they know? Who
could of these politicians have been listening to? The
North Vietnamese? Or themselves? Certainly not to the Pathet Lao!
In the late seventies I started writing my
representatives, but to no avail. Though each President
since has pledged to make the POW/MIA issue of the "highest
national priority", nothing other than seeking remains in
South East Asia has occurred.
So, with that said, I decided to post some of the
information and correspondence that I have collected over
the years. I suggest that, if your interested (and you
should be), that you start by reading the French Experience
and the Interim Report on the Southeast Asian POW/MIA
Issue.
As a final note, after writing the Defense Prisoner Of
War/Missing Personnel Office (DMPO) one too many times, my
Congressman received a letter from the DPMO telling him in
not so many words that I was a pain in the butt and they
would no longer communicate with me. Then the DPMO thanked
my congressman for his concern, "your continued concern and
support for this important humanitarian issue are
gratefully acknowledged and appreciated by the men and
women of this office. We stand ready to assist you with any
other issues you may have concerning our area of
responsibility and ask that you not hesitate to contact us
if we may be of further assistance to you and your office."
Yes, they will help with any other issues he may have, but
not with finding the truth.
