Tour in support of "Blackhorse" 11 Cav. Reg. First Tour Sept. 1966 to 1967

I was with a unit in support of 11 Cav. Reg., "Blackhorse", we were the first to arrive in Xuan Loc, base camp for the 11 Cav. Reg., our unit was the 506 S. and S. Co., also went on Operation Junction City.

This photo is an area we saw very often in running convoys down this road almost daily, nothing but thick jungle areas right next to the road. During the rainy season, the road was so thick with mud it was like deep snow, this made you a very easy target, as you were moving like a snail, if at all.

This is where we first came into country, the village of Bien Hoa, spent a few hours here.

When we first arrived at our base camp at Xuan Loc, it was so small we used these Armored Personnel Carriers as barriers for our perimeter.
We did have our beloved Donut Dollys come around a few times to cheer us up, it really was a super job, their just being there really helped.

I was just your typical nineteen year old, very naive at best, but doing what my country had asked of me. This was the tent I called home, for almost a year.

Both of these photos were taken on Operation Junction City, at the Black Virgin Mountain, near Soui Da.

The photo on the right is a friend of mine from this tour, whom I have never been able to locate to this day. His name is Charles Coburn, lived somewhere in Tenn. at the time, anyone who might know him, please let me know, thanks.

Well this is a quick look into my first year in the Nam, fairly uneventful, could go on and on about little things that happened, but not enough room here.
