Greg Van Overloop - 10/08/00 00:58:22 My Email:VanOverloop.compaq.net Veteran?: Yes Branch:: Navy Service (year): 1966 - 1973 | Comments: I have always been very supportive of our flag and country. I certainly hope follow generations are equally supportive. One position this country and follow generations must always take is support of the democratic process. Even after all these years, I do not understand the approach that our elected and military leaders took toward this war. Our brave men and women in the field suffered and died. I tried to support the effort in my own manner in the nuclear submarine branch of the Navy. I still do not understand our approach to the war. We have always had the equipment and trained fighting corps to win any armed conflict. However, after having viewed the Moving Wall and obsorbing the results with all the names, I am more convinced than ever that our leaders never really understood what was necessary to win. May our government and military leaders learn from history. No war is good. But, if we must support the democratic process in foreign lands, let the appropriate military leaders proceed with the full resolve of our country and with the full inventory of our military. The Persian Gulf War was an example. Do not go about war in a manner that wastes the lives of our fighting men and women. |

Jack C. Perritt - 09/29/00 16:57:15 My Email:STWR2003@cs.com Veteran?: Yes Branch:: USMC Service (year): 1967-1970 | Comments: Your site is a touching tribute to the men and women who served our nation in the savagery, chaos, and heartbreak of the Vietnam War. Their courage and devotion to duty is perhaps the true measure of the legacy of the Vietnam War. They were asked to endur what no young person should have ever had to endure. One of your native sons was my friend. John F. Higgins. When I returned home his mother Martha, wrote me the sweetest and most gracious letters. I will never forget this act of kindness by her. In 1995, I wrote a letter for John, that was to be taken to t e Vietnam Memorial Wall, in Washington DC. I have as yet not made the trip. Perhaps it is the thought of youthful faces eternally locked in black granite rock and the haunting memories of man's inhumanity to man in the conduct of warfare. It was the longe t and most divisive war our nation has endured outside of the Great Civil War. Yet, young men and women came forward and served with honor and distinction. This speaks well of us as a nation. To the Higgins family, here is the letter I wrote for John: Dated, April 1995. Oh, my friend what can I say. Twenty-seven years have passed since either your or I had to endure the bitterness and hardships of Vietnam. I was lucky, I came home and my life was richly blessed. I have a good job, a beautiful, loving wife, and a great yo ng man for a son. My son is your age now and going to college, I am so proud of him. I wrote your mother several letters when I came home. She in return wrote back to me and made me feel as though I was one of her own. What a sweet, loving woman she is and how very proud she is of son too. In one of her letters, she included a copy of you Silver Star citation. John, your unselfish devotion to your country, your men, and the extraordinary courage you exhibited in combat, has been a constant example to me in my life. The first few times I read it, I did so through choking tears and tremblin hands, not only for you but for those at Cau Viet, Hill 950 and for countless others. I have at times endured incredible waves of guilt for having survived and enjoyed the fruits of life, while your own life was so violently shattered and ripped away fro you. I will promise you, that as long as I live, I will be a living testimony to the sacrifices you and so many others made, and I will let no one...absolutely no one, ever defile or tarnish your hallowed memory. Remember the flag I carried with the insc iption "Days of Glory, Days of Blood?" Those words now ring like a constant echo in my mind and heart...never letting me forget the valiant struggle so many died for. I cannot bear to tell you the worst of news on how it all ended. When we meet again, embrace me and welcome me heartily and face to face I will tell you the saddest of stories. Till then my friend rest,...rest in heavenly repose and God's strong arms. Jack C. Perritt USMC RVN 1968-1969 |
