Colonel David G. Linnebur
Colonel David G. Linnebur was born on August 5, 1953 and is a
native of Spearville Kansas. He was commissioned a second
lieutenant through the platoon leader class program and reported
to The Basic School in June, 1975.
After The Basic School he reported to 1st Battalion, 4th
Marines, 3d Marine Division to serve in various billets to
include rifle platoon commander, 106 recoilless rifle/Dragon
platoon commander, liaison officer, company executive officer,
and assistant S-3. While at Okinawa, Japan he deployed with BLT
1/4 and 31st MAU before the Battalion relocated to MCB
Twentynine Palms in October 1977 as the Marine Corps initiated
the Unit Deployment Program. He was promoted to the rank of
Captain in October 1979.
In February, 1980 Captain Linnebur reported to the Naval
Postgraduate School. In May 1982, he received an M.S. Degree in
Operations Research. He subsequently transferred to
Headquarters Marine Corps to serve three years as an operations
research analyst in manpower department.
In May 1985, Capt Linnebur reported to 1st Marine Division to
serve as the operations officer, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, and
was subsequently promoted to the rank of major in May 1986. As
the BLT operations officer he deployed with 11th MAU in 1986 and
again with 11th MEU (SOC) in 1988.
Following his FMF tour he attended the Armed Forces Staff
College in January 1989 and was subsequently selected for a
one-year fellowship at the Mershon Center, Ohio State University
in June 1989.
During July 1990, Major Linnebur reported to United States
Central Command, Tampa, Florida as an operations plans officer
in J-3. His joint tour included a deployment to Riyadh, Saudi
Arabia for Operation Desert Storm and participation in the
planning and deployment of forces for Operation Restore Hope in
Somalia. In August 1992, he was promoted to the rank of
lieutenant colonel.
In July 1993, he returned to Okinawa as the operations
officer, G-3, III MEF. One year later he returned to
Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. to head the Marine
Corps Command Center in plans, policies and operations
department before returning to 1st Marine Division in August
1996 to serve as a plans officer in G-3.
Lieutenant Colonel Linnebur assumed command of 2nd Battalion,
5th marines on January 24, 1997 and was promoted to the rank of
colonel on October 1, 1997.
He is married to the former Cynthia Lee Lintner. They have two
children, Michelle and Ryan.
