SAIGON-- The 2nd Bn., 3rd Inf. Of the 199th Light Inf. Brigade, which has
participated in most major U.S. conflicts since 1784, will be redeployed from South
Vietnam as part of the fourth increment of troop reductions here, according to the
U.S. command.
The "Old Guard's" 2nd Bn., has begun to stand down and will eventually be
reduced to a color bearing detachment before returning to the United States where
it will be inactivated.
Other members of the battalion will be reassigned to units in Vietnam to complete
their overseas tours. The action will result in an eventual reduction of 920 personnel.
Meanwhile, U.S. military strength in Vietnam dropped by 1,400 troops during the
week ending Sept. 24, falling to 394,100 men, the U.S. command announced Monday.
The Marines withdrew 1,300 men during the week, the Navy 400 and the Air Force
300, a command spokesman said. Army strength increased by 600 during the week,
he said.
