Ford Motor Company's assembly plant in Milpitas,
California played an important role in the growth and
development of the automotive industry in the post-World
War II era. The plant, which began vehicle production in
1955, was part of a large-scale nationwide expansion
program begun by Ford to capitalize on the postwar
economic boom. Early models included full-sized Ford
cars and trucks.
In its 28-year history, the plant assembled a wide variety
of Ford vehicles, including such well-known cars as the
Mustang, Falcon, Fairlane, Cougar, Pinto, Comet, and
Escort, along with F-Series pickup trucks. It also
produced the short-lived Edsel for several months in the
late 1950's.
Covering nearly two million square feet, the plant was
described in its early days as an industrial giant. During
peak production years in the 1960's and 1970's, it
employed as many as 5,000 employees on two shifts, with
daily output of 1,000 cars and trucks. The plant produced
a total of nearly five million vehicles in its 28 years.
And check out the spectacular transportation theme
courts throughout the mall. Besides a court dedicated to
automobiles, you'll also find separate courts for airplanes,
trains, and ships. Each court commemorates the era when
that particular mode of transportation became part of the
American lifestyle. It's a wild walk through time. And we
guarantee it's unlike anything you have ever seen at a
shopping center.
