A Tribute in Honor of:
Melissa Rose Barnes
Melissa Rose Barnes was a Yeoman Third Class for the United States Navy.  She died September 11th during the terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
Melissa was not only my co-worker, but she was also my roommate.   She was the first person to befriend me in the DC area.  She quickly became one of my best friends, and until the day she died I had never truly known loss or pain.  One of my fondest memories of Melissa was the day she brought home a "Go Navy" license plate.  I told her that it was "cheesy", "so boot camp", and teased her for being "gung-ho".  At the time I had not realized how much the Navy meant to her.  At a time when most of us were making plans to get out of the Navy, she re-enlisted.  It is because of Melissa that I now have one of those "cheesy" Navy stickers on my truck.

On September 29th, Amanda Fowler and I escorted her body to California to be buried.  Though it was the saddest duty I have ever performed, I had never been more proud to represent the Navy for someone as special as Melissa.

Since her death I have realized that Melissa was the most non-materialistic person I have ever known.  She was as content to have a $15 sweater from Wal-Mart as most of us are to own something name brand.  I will never forget the many laughs we shared or our frequent dates with "Ben and Jerry".  More than anything I will never forget her smile.

To sum Melissa up:
She was the type of friend you could spend hours with, never say a word, yet walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you ever had.  She is greatly missed!

May we all remember that people come into our lives for a reason.  You may make a friend for life.  Don't ever take anyone for granted.  Appreciate every hug or smile you receive from someone...you may not ever have the opportunity to receive it again.
