To Granddad, From Carrie Jo

by Carrie Jo Mc Farland

You left us one sad July night;
Soon my sadness turned to fright.

You are my hero, and now you are gone;
Taken away just before dawn.
I watched you as you took your last breath of life;
It cut through my heart like a knife.

I will never hear you call me C.J. ,
Or talk about that silly bluejay.
Never again laugh when you fall asleep in front of that television,
Or type away at the computer; your everyday mission.

On bad days, you could always make me smile.
I will always remember running my hand over your soft crew cut hair, and
Taping Grandmother's Club Dance from your reclining chair.

It will be hard for me to get over the fact you are gone,
But I know my life will go on.

There is one question I ask everyday,
Why, why didn't I stay?
