My great-uncle, Lt. Commander A.E. Loeser served and died on the Atlanta. A destroyer escort, the Loeser, was later commissioned in his memory.

My father was a plankowner on the USS Oakland CL-95. I've been doing research on his ship, where she was & what she was doing during the time he was a crewmember, to be put into notebook-form for his memories. Your site is very informative and interesti
g. I thank God and the men who gave of themselves to fight so we could have the freedoms we so enjoy in this country today.

For many years as a lad growing up in southwestern Pennsylvania I heard my mom and dad talk of my Uncle Stanley (my dad's brother)having been on the same ship as the 5 Sullivan Brothers.
Of course, this was the USS JUNEAU which, as we know, was sunk on Friday the thirteenth of November, 1942 by the Japanese submarine I-26.
My uncle's name was Stanley Kokoska and was from Republic, Pennsylvania. (His name is listed on page 312 of Dan Kurzman's book, Left to Die - The Tragedy of the USS JUNEAU.) Ironically, I joined the U.S. Navy in 1956 fresh out of high school and after boo
camp and Class "A" Yeoman School reported for Basic Submarine School in New London, Connecticut. Subsequently I then qualified as a submariner on the USS SEA ROBIN (ss 407). I have often wondered if my fascination with subs was a result of my uncle's tra
ic event.
Several years ago my mom gave me a post card dated October 30, 1942 written by my uncle on which he states that he is well. Little did he realize that in a few short weeks he would be a part of history. Should any of the relatives of the JUNEAU's crewmemb
rs have in their possession any pictures, letters, etc. bearing the name of Stanley Kokoska, please e-mail me at Sub407@aol.com Thank you... John Kokish 10-06-00
