POEMS FROM THE HEART

POEMS FROM THE HEART

A collection of poems, prose and sentiments to honour those serving and to those who have served their country.

Dedicated to those who march on in our defence,
so shall we march on in their support.

COOKBOOK RECIPE FOR AN ARMY WIFE

1 1/2 cups patience
1 lb. courage
2 tbsp. elbow grease
1 3/4 cups tolerance
a dash of adventure

Marinate frequently with salty tears,
pour off excess fat
and sprinkle ever so lightly with money.
Knead dough until payday,
season with international spices.
Bake for 20 years or longer until done.
To preserve the quality of this recipe,
you must add contentment,
a little rest and togetherness,
put on back burner
and baste it with a lot of good memories.

REMEMBER ME

We bid farewell to family and friends,
In hope that someday we'll live as brothers.
I pray for the day all wars will end,
and my fate shall be spared to others.

It was the war to end all wars,
That is what they had said.
After all these years,
Canada still counts her dead.

I was a true Canadian,
I wish you could see,
All I ask is,
Remember Me.

In war I fought and died,
I thought it did cease.
Now under the Blue Beret,
I die for World Peace.

Like Michael Ralph, John Ternapolski,
Plus the thousands of soldiers before.
On November 11th
Remember
I died for Peace not War.

I was a true Canadian,
I wish you could see.
All I ask is,
Remember Me.

AT THE READY

He's not a Vet of any war,
No combat has he seen,
But he pledged his life to the corp,
His country and his Queen.

He's seen the world, both the good and bad,
He's made friends far and wide,
He's left his home to keep the peace,
His family often cried.

It was not his job to shoot or jump,
Or drive a monster truck,
But in his years of service corps,
He trudged his share of muck.

The politics of day to day,
May dominate his memory,
But never doubt he did his share--,
He was always
AT THE READY.

Dedicated to Dad

~JUST A COMMON SOLDIER~

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion telling stories of his past
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies~~they were heroes, every one.

And tho' sometimes to his neighbours, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke
But we'll hear his tales no longer, for old Bill has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer, for the soldier died today.

He won't be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary, quick and uneventful life
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way
And the world won't note his passing, tho' a soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great,
Papers tell their life stories from the time that they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.

In the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land
One guy breaks his promises and cons his fellow man
But the ordinary fellow, who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country and offers up his life.

A politician's stipend and the style in which he lives
Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives
While the ordinary soldier who offered up his all
Is paid off with a medal and perhaps a pension small.

It's so easy to forget them, for it was so long ago
That the old Bills of our country went to battle, but we know
It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys
Who won for us the freedom that our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger with your enemies at hand
Would you want a politician with his ever~shifting stand
Or would you prefer a soldier who has sworn to defend
His home, his kin and country and would fight right to the end?

He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin
But his presence should remind us we may need his likes again.
For when countries are in conflict then we find the soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honour while he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, FOR A SOLDIER DIED TODAY !!"

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; Be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

LEST WE FORGET

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the year's condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We Will Remember Them"

"A BATTLE PRAYER"

Young Warriors;
Should fate find you on the battlefield,
May your cause be a just one.
May your courage not falter.
May you show mercy to your enemies.
May your efforts bring the blessings of peace.
May you be triumphant and earn victory.
May your sacrifice be always appreciated.
May you endure the conflict unharmed.
Should you be harmed,
May your wounds heal.
Should you perish in the struggle,
May God embrace you and find a
Place for you in his Kingdom.
