In the Name of Allah, most Compassionate, most Merciful

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4092 Narrated by Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin
Asma, daughter of Abu Bakr, entered upon the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) wearing thin clothes. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) turned his attention from her. He said: O Asma', when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and he pointed to her face and hands.

I would like to say that "cover everything except hands, face" is from a weak hadith tradition and many strong hadith contradict it. And there is not really any hadith that supports it. Many scholars classify it as weak including Abu Dawood himself who stated that it is unreliable because it is mursal hadith.

First thing to note is that it is from Sunan of Abu Dawood, which is known to have many weak traditions by all scholars. His traditions are no-where comparable to imam Bukhari which has been authenticated by the leading scholars in his time.

Secondly, the thing that proves this hadith as weak is how can the daughter of Abu Bakr, also the Sister of umm-ul-momineen would not know the basic fundamentals of Islam and come to Prophet's (S) house without following the guidelines of Hijab? If you read the hadith from Bukhari that...

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.282 Narrated by Safiya bint Shaiba
'Aisha used to say: "When (the Verse): 'They should draw their veils over their necks and bosoms,' was revealed, the ladies cut their waist sheets at the edges and covered their faces with the cut pieces."

We see many things from this hadith but what I also see is that all the Muslim women had the news spread to them and they all did it. So how can the sister of Aisha and the daughter of Abu Bakr be left out?

Another hadith collection "Al-Muwatta", also proves the abu dawood hadith as weak because....

Al-Muwatta Hadith 20.16
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that Fatima bint al-Mundhir said, "We used to veil our faces when we were in ihram in the company of ASMA BINT ABI BAKR AS-SIDDIQ."

Also, the other correction I would like to make on showing the face and hands is that we cannot imitate disbelievers. So how come the women who wear scarf etc imitate Christian women of few centuries ago and as well as NUNS of today?
