One of the signs of day of
judgment is that singing, music and similar things would become common place. The haram things always slowly creep into the ummah mainly coming from doubtful things and from dangerous places. When the Quran and Sunnah are not cared about, haram things take full force. To combat these things, we must strictly guard our deen and avoid doubtful matters at all cost. Listening to poetry, singing, music and nasheed all fall in these categories. We have plenty of hadith that these things were very restricted and discouraged and some banned. As we know that singing and poetry and restricted use of daff was allowed in situations like Eid or marriage only, otherwise it is haram. Even in those situations, the sunnah is to avoid taking part in those things even in Eid or marriages.
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 2.72 Narrated by Aisha
Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said
protesting, "Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Allah's Apostle !" It happened on the 'Id day and Allah's Apostle said, "O Abu Bakr! There is an 'Id for every nation and this is our 'Id."
So even though Prophet (S) allowed it, the status of singing and poetry remained as something bad in the minds of the
Sahabas.
Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Umar ibn al-Khattab set aside an area near the mosque called al-Butayha and said, "Whoever wishes to talk nonsense or recite poetry or raise his voice should go to that area."
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.176 Narrated by Abu Huraira
Allah's Apostle; said, "It is better for anyone of you that the inside of his body be filled with pus which may consume his body, than it be filled with poetry."
Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4909 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
Salam ibn Miskin, quoting an old man who witnessed AbuWa'il in a wedding feast, said: They began to play, amuse and sing. He united the support of his hand round his knees that were drawn up, and said: I heard Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) say: I heard the apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Singing produces hypocrisy in the heart.
So we can clearly see that if we want to be closer to Allah, we should avoid these things from our normal daily lives. Some poetry in the
Makkah was done by Muslims in terms of fighting the pagans of Makkah. But it was changed later on after the hijrah because actual fighting with hands was made an obligation for the believers. Lastly, what about nasheed and songs or poetry to bring people closer to Allah and for fighting? Well, if we disobey the Quran and Sunnah then the punishment of hellfire and destruction on this earth should be enough of encouragement for us to commit our lives for Allah and Islam. Quran should be learn and recited and this is what use to move and effect the
Sahabas and guided them.
