It is said
in Quran that the believers are those who spend their wealth from what
Allah has provided them. If we don't spend this money, and instead
keep in saving then it becomes a cause of fire in day of judgment.
There are very few exceptions if none, mainly to save money to buy a
weapon in order to fight for sake of Allah, or to repay a debt.
But even for these reasons, Sahabas did not sit down to save money, but
buy things or repay things when their pay check use to come in their
hands. The following hadith describes clearly the consequences
otherwise of a savings account.
Sahih
Al-Bukhari Hadith 2.489 Narrated by Al Ahnaf bin Qais
While I was sitting with some people from Quraish, a man with very rough
hair, clothes, and appearance came and stood in front of us, greeted us
and said, "Inform those who hoard wealth, that a stone will be
heated in the Hell-fire and will be put on the nipples of their breasts
till it comes out from the bones of their shoulders and then put on the
bones of their shoulders till it comes through the nipples of their
breasts the stone will be moving and hitting." After saying that,
the person retreated and sat by the side of the pillar, I followed him
and sat beside him, and I did not know who he was. I said to him,
"I think the people disliked what you had said." He said,
"These people do not understand anything, although my friend told
me." I asked, "Who is your friend?" He said, "The
Prophet said (to me), 'O Abu Dhar! Do you see the mountain of Uhud?' And
on that I (Abu Dhar) started looking towards the sun to judge how much
remained of the day as I thought that Allah's Apostle wanted to send me
to do something for him and I said, 'Yes!' He said, 'I do not love to
have gold equal to the mountain of Uhud unless I spend it all (in
Allah's cause) except three Dinars (pounds).' These people do not
understand and collect worldly wealth. No, by Allah, Neither I ask them
for worldly benefits nor am I in need of their religious advice till I
meet Allah, The Honorable, The Majestic."
Sunan of
Abu-Dawood Hadith 4226 Narrated by Asma' daughter of Yazid
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Any woman who wears a gold
necklace will have a similar one of fire put on her neck on the Day of
Resurrection, and any woman who puts a gold earring in her ear will have
a similar one of fire put in her ear on the Day of Resurrection.
Note: Sahih
Al-Bukhari Hadith 5.462 Narrated by Aisha: "I came back to my
riding animal. I touched my chest to find that my necklace which was
made of Zifar beads (i.e. Yemenite beads partly black and partly white)
was missing. " So the Muslim women didn't use to have gold
necklaces, bracelets etc, apparent from the hadith collections.
So if
whatever money we get, if we don't spend it in Allah's cause as soon as
possible, it is equal to hoarding money. A person would say, if I
don't save money, I would be poor! But lets examine the following
hadith.
Sahih Muslim
Hadith 6251 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Do you know who is poor? They
(the Companions of the Prophet) said: A poor man amongst us is one who
has neither dirham with him nor wealth. He (the Prophet) said: The poor
of my Ummah would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with
prayers and fasts and Zakat but (he would find himself bankrupt on that
day as he would have exhausted his funds of virtues) since he hurled
abuses upon others, brought calumny against others and unlawfully
consumed the wealth of others and shed the blood of others and beat
others, and his virtues would be credited to the account of one (who
suffered at his hand). And if his good deeds fall short to clear the
account, then his sins would be entered in (his account) and he would be
thrown in the Hell-Fire.
So here we
see that poverty is not lack of money, but lack of virtues. Not
the lack of savings account, but the lack of savings of good deeds!
