What are the
Muslims and their kids learning in their lives today? They are
learning how to attain the highest level of enjoyment, fame and status
in this life. This reasoning does not only make them as good as
the disbelievers in this world, but a far greater torment in the
hereafter. The Muslims are and will be disgraced in this life and
in hellfire in the next life.
Sunan of
Abu-Dawood Hadith 3656 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone acquires knowledge of
things by which Allah's good pleasure is sought, but acquires it only to
get some worldly advantage, he will not experience the smell of
Paradise.
The hadith
Muslims use to back up their claim of learning whatever they like is as
follows.
Al-Tirmidhi
Hadith 218 Narrated by Anas ibn Malik
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The seeking of knowledge is
obligatory for every Muslim.
Now when
Prophet (S) is telling us something, shouldn't we be careful and not
mindlessly go on about our own nafs (desires)? So what did Prophet
(S) considered knowledge in this hadith?
Sahih
Al-Bukhari Hadith 4.784 Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah
The Prophet used to stand by a tree or a date-palm on Friday. Then an
Ansari woman or man said. "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we make a
pulpit for you?" He replied, "If you wish." So they made
a pulpit for him and when it was Friday, he proceeded towards the pulpit
(for delivering the sermon). The date-palm cried like a child! The
Prophet descended (the pulpit) and embraced it while it continued
moaning like a child being quietened. The Prophet said, "It was
crying for (missing) what it used to hear of religious knowledge given
near to it."
Ok, so even
a date-palm knows what knowledge Prophet (S) meant for the Muslims to
learn. Are the Muslims today smarter or higher in IQ then a
date-palm?
Sahih
Al-Bukhari Hadith 1.75 Narrated by Ibn Abbas
Once the Prophet embraced me and said, "O Allah! Bestow on him the
knowledge of the Book (Qur'an)."
So from the
above hadith we see what kind of knowledge Prophet (S) recommended to
his very loved ones! And finally the hadith that explains it all.
Sunan of
Abu-Dawood Hadith 2879 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Knowledge has three categories;
anything else is extra; a precise verse, or an established sunnah, or a
firm obligatory duty.
So the
knowledge of Quran, Sunnah and obligation in Islam is what is commanded
and is prescribed in Islam for every single Muslim. Any other
knowledge besides this is extra baggage. So to be an agriculture
engineer, physicist, engineer or doctor, is extra. What the
Muslims do today is extra part only and they forget the main obligation.
They forget the necessary, and run for the unnecessary! Why?
Simply to attain this world.
Al-Tirmidhi
Hadith 261 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
There are two avaricious people who are never contented: the man of
learning and the man of the world, but the two are not equal. The man of
knowledge increases in submission to Allah, and as for the man of the
world, he becomes headstrong and defiant. Abdullah then recited: `Nay
man is surely rebellious when he sees himself free from want.' (46:6)
Concerning the other he recited the verse: `Surely those of His servants
who are possessed of knowledge, fear Allah.' (35:28)
So what
should have been done in terms of Education?
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 279 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to me: Acquire the knowledge
and impart it to the people. Acquire the knowledge of Fara'id (laws of
inheritance) and teach it to the people, learn the Qur'an and teach it
to the people; for I am a person who has to depart this world and the
knowledge will be taken away and turmoil will appear to such an extent
that two people will not agree in regard to a case of inheritance
distribution and find none who would decide between them.
Al-Tirmidhi
Hadith 742 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah
I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: He who comes to
this mosque of mine and he comes only to learn or teach a khayr (good,
i.e. the Qur'an and the Sunnah), his status is like that of one who
strives in the cause of Allah. He who comes for any other motive, his
status is like that of a person who covets the property of another.
Al-Tirmidhi
Hadith 2143 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Learn and recite the
Qur'an, for to one who learns, recites and uses it in prayer at night,
it is like a bag filled with musk whose fragrance is diffused
everywhere; and he who learns it and goes to sleep having it within him,
is like a bag with musk tied up in it."
Sahih
Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.546 Narrated by Uthman bin Affan
The Prophet said, "The most superior among you (Muslims) are those
who learn the Qur'an and teach it."
Sahih
Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.543 Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar
Allah's Apostle said, "Not to wish to be the like except of two
men. A man whom Allah has given the knowledge of the Book and he recites
it during the hours of the night, and a man whom Allah has given wealth,
and he spends it in charity during the night and the hours of the
day."
Sahih
Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.459 Narrated by Aisha
The Prophet said, "Such a person as recites the Qur'an and masters
it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven). And
such a person exerts himself to learn the Qur'an by heart, and recites
it with great difficulty, will have a double reward."
So even if
you have difficulties or disabilities, you still try to get educated.
And lastly, the people would say, what about my career in life, wealth,
fame, status?
Sahih
Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.119 Narrated by Ibn Abbas
...Then I looked around his house, and by Allah, I could not see
anything of importance in his house except three hides, so I said, 'O
Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah to make your followers rich, for the
Persians and the Romans have been made prosperous and they have been
given the pleasures of the world, although they do not worship Allah.'
Thereupon the Prophet sat up as he was reclining. and said, 'Are you of
such an opinion, O the son of Al-Khattab? These are the people who have
received the rewards for their good deeds in this world.' I said, 'O
Allah's Apostle! Ask Allah to forgive me.'
So the technical skills in the affairs of this world is secondary issue
to all of the above and an extra.
