Prophet (S) has warned his Ummah about falling into many
extravagances. One of the most notable one is food. How easy it is for a person to become ungrateful about food. Wheat is one of those things that people eat everyday in huge amounts. Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Isa ibn Maryam used to say, "O Banu Israil! You must drink pure water and the green things of the land and barley bread . Beware of wheat bread, for you will not be grateful enough for it." Al-Muwatta Hadith 49.27 So it is not only Prophet (S) who warned his people about extravagances in food, but also the prophets for nations before us. How far have people deviated today! Our teacher and example is the example of Prophet Muhammad (S). Allah said in quran that he is the best model for you to follow! Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.457 Narrated by Anas The Prophet did not eat at a table till he died, and he did not eat a thin nicely baked wheat bread till he died. Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.325 Narrated by Abu Huraira that he passed by a group of people in front of whom there was a roasted sheep. They invited him but he refused to eat and said, "Allah's Apostle left this world without satisfying his hunger even with barley bread." Sahih Muslim Hadith 7091 Narrated by Aisha "Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) died (in such a state) that there had been nothing in my wooden tub which a living being could afford to eat but a handful of barley therein. I had been eating out of that for a fairly long duration when I thought of measuring it and it was almost finished." |
