I received U.S. Postal Service mail from Senator Faircloth on August 13, 1997.
This was in response to my normal plea for support of S-755.
Here is the Senator's reply.
Dear Mr. Janes:
Thank you for contacting my office concerning members of our armed services that have been declared "Missing In Action."
The large number of MIA cases that remain unresolved is evidence for further congressional attention to this matter. It is the
responsibility of Congress to make sure that if ever our country becomes involved in combat, every step will be taken to account for the
missing. This is the least we can do for the families who have experienced the tragedy of having loved ones' whereabouts unknown.
As you know, I was a co-sponsor of the "Missing Service Personnel Act of 1995" which provided the model for the
legislation recently introduced by Senator Campbell. I suspect that after reviewing Senate Bill 755, it too will receive my co-sponsorship.
Again, thank you for bringing this legislation to my attention. Please feel free to contact me in the future about any issue of
importance to you.
Warmest personal regards,
etc.etc.
After a passage of time and constant checking the list of co-sponsors for
Senator Fairclothes name, I again wrote the Senator on September 24, 1997. My message:
Dear Senator Faircloth,
I am writing you with my continued concern for the successful passage of
Senate Bill 755.
On August 8, 1997 you wrote to me in part:
As you know, I was a co-sponsor of the "Missing Service Personnel Act of
1995" which provided the model for the legislation recently introduced by
Senator Campbell. I suspect that After reviewing Senate Bill 755, it too
will receive my co-sponsorship.
A review of the current list of co-sponsors for S755 is disappointing to
me. The most recent Senators to sign on are:
Conrad Burns (R) Montana
Tom Harkin (D) Iowa
Charles Grassley (R) Iowa
Sam Brown Back (R) Kansas
Tim Hutinson (D) Arkansas
Kent Conrad (D) North Dakata
I believe that this legislation is critical to the best interests of our
country and that it will provide the best possible chance for rescue and
survival of Americans who may become Prisoners of War/Missing in Action
in future wars. I also believe this legislation requires your immediate
attention.
I urge you to sign on as a co-sponsor and ask your fellow North Carolina
Senator to do the same.
Respectfully,
Bruce T. Janes
