He didn't talk much about what he did, but I do believe that he was one of the firefighters in the Life 6 photo series. My grandmother ke t the copy of the magazine locked up but used to bring it out in our reminising moods. He joined his fallen shipmates in 1996, stricken by cancer. I am proud of him and all the men of the Mighty Moo! MSgt James Elways, USAF

I am writing this on behalf of my father, Harvey Hensley. He was an SB2-C tailgunner aboard CVL-25 for a short time before being sent to flight school to be trained to fly the FM-1, F4F-3 and the F6F-5. After leaving CVL-25 he was assigned to Yorktown u til she sank at Midway. He was one of the pilots forced to land on the Enterprise where he took up residence until she was hit and returned to Pearl Harbor for repair in drydock. Once back in Hawaii, his air group was transferred to the Savo Island unti the end of the war. At the end of the war, he flew escort with the Enola Gay to bomb Hiroshima. He told me that no one knew what was aboard that aircraft other than it would end WWII and that the Enola Gay was to complete her mission at all costs. He as also one of the few non-comms allowed to fly during the war. If anyone recognizes his name, feel free to contact me, and I'll pass your message along to Dad. He is still alive and well and living in Kentucky.

My brother, Leslie V. Hunt, flew torpedo bombers off the Cowpens. He passed away three years ago. He was proud of his service, but he told few war stories to anyone. It was not until after his death that his three sons discovered that he had been award d the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other awards (apparently he sank a Japanese ship with a bomb down the stack). His family knows very little about his actual war experiences, and this web site is a treasure cove. Les would have loved this place. erhaps someone remembers Les Hunt, a former pilot and squadron commander. I'd love to hear from anyone with an old story.

I have been trying to pull together a lot of things about family history and all of you would certainly be a big part of that hi tory. My father would,ve been elated with the Cowpens web site,if he were still with us today,he passed away in 1987.His name was Al Brothers, and he was from Boston,Mass. He served in the engine room, and was a fireman as well aboard the Cowpens during the war.Pr or to boarding the Cowpens,he also had served on the Wasp, and I believe the Yorktown. His dad,my grandfather, had been a Navy vet in WW1,having served aboard the USS Shawmut. My father was proud of the time he spent aboard the Cowpens, and honored to have ser ed our country. As he lay dying in 1987,one of his last requests, was to have ten battle stars placed,on his grave marker.During the 30,s he left school to work in the CCC camps, and joined the navy when the war broke out. Some of his biggest victories in lif ,were eventually those that he shared with his fellow crew members, aboared the Cowpens in WW2.We heard the story of the typhoon many times over. His patriotism was an inspiration to me and my brothers.I,and an older brother, enlisted during the Vietnam conf ict,we both served in southeast Asia.My older brother with the 1st Marine Div. in Vietnam, and I with the Air Force,on a combat support base,on Formosa.A younger brother enlisted in the Army, were he served for 6 years, until he was injured on manuevers.I am proud of my dad,who i miss, but i am also proud to live in a country where 60 years ago, many young men went off to fight,in the war of all wars.Forever,I will be gratefull to those old warriors.Surely the world today should be indebted to them. Thanks,Tim B others

My grandfather served on the ship during the Battle of Leyte Gulf and in the Aleutians. He was a member of the deck crew and had the hazardous job of helping to launch and recover the planes. He nearly lost his life when a plane almost went off the side of the ship, missing him by a matter of feet. He fondly recalled the brave men that he served with. But there were also hard times. He remembered Lt. Comm. Price being washed overboard and Typhoon Cobra. The ship was nearly declared lost at sea. His addest memory was one evening during submarine alert. The deck lights were extinguished. One plane was still out, though. The pilot repeatedly asked for the lights to be turned on so he could land. The radio was on throughout the entire ship, as was s andard practice. He continued to circle and grew more desparate until he ran out of fuel and crashed. It deeply saddened him and the crew. He married and moved to California in the 1950's where he began a family in Rialto and entered the restaurant bus ness. I am the oldest son of his youngest daughter. He died of a heart attack at the age of forty-six in 1970. I never had the honor of meeting him. But my family still remembers his vitality and sense of humor and will always cherish his memory. He nd the men of the U.S.S. Cowpens sacraficed their lives to ensure that we could live free. They succeeded. They will always be our heroes. My family is curious about any veterans who may have served with him. Please e-mail us if you recognize his name

I am a teacher and often take my Dad's pictures from the Cowpens into school and display them for my students. I have an original photograph of the treaty deliberations below the Missouri. This and others like it must have been passed among the photographers. I have an array of pictures of the action and pilots. I have pictures of the men in the T kyo area after leaving ship. I corresponded with a Wilhelmind Dearybury back in 1984 and he sent much material to me. I failed to follow up with different addresses at that time. I would like to renew my correspondence with any living members who might ave known my dad. My father died in 1979 and told me little of his experiences. Would anyone be able to help me before there isn't anyone left. Email addresses would be a great help. Thank You Drake Owen

My Dad, John Kullenberg, served on the Cowpens from its beginning. I recently obtained his letters from the war, which don't say too much, a lot of censoring, but he does talk about the ship and how great it looked. My father, Calvin Orin Cunningham, was forman of the nitrate plant at Dana Indiana, where they made C2 plastic explosives, in the early 1940's. Even though he had better things to do with two children at home, he quit his war related job in order to be e igible for the draft. He was allowed to choose his branch of service when he was drafted, and chose to go in the Navy. He had two older brothers in WW I, and an older brother, already in the Navy, so he didn't want to be the only brother to not go to war. Not that he didn't enjoy a good fight. He got in bar room brawls like other guys would get in a pick up baseball game. He seldom said much about the death related aspects of his war time experience after he came home. He would talk more about how he had buddied up with some of the CB's, or how they spent two days in a C-van waiting out a bad typhoon that went throug . I'm not sure what his job discription was, I know he was stationed in Okinawa in 1945, and was envolved in the manufacturing of acetylene. One thing he made sure his family knew was, he returned from the war on the Cowpens. I was told, not only by him, but my older siblings, and my mother, that he came back on the Cowpens. My younger brother was also informed. Why he seemed to believe t is was such an important feature of his time in the service, I really don't know. Possibly he made some good friends, that were crew members of the Cowpens, and was made aware of there distinguished war record. Even though his activities on the Cowpens would have been assembly, chow, card games, a stop in Hawaii, and seeing a whale, It was like a requirement in our family to know that dad returned from the war on board the Cowpens. In September of 1969, my father went with me, and two younger buddies, to help me rent my own place; a war home, across from Naval Avionics in Indianapolis. The owner of these old war homes was a recently retired Navy man and of course the Cowpens wa mentioned in their conversation. Less than a month later, a kid from my high school was blowing taps over my fathers grave. Thirty years after he passed away, I was able to find this site from the seeds he planted so long ago. And here I find a since of pride that must have been so significant to my father. Thanks for bringing my daddy back Cowpens. You will be in the Cal Cunningham's family forever.

Congratulations on a great webpage and thank you for all of the work you've done on it! I don't remember if I saw it in your guestbook or someone else's, but I saw a comment from a fellow that he'd just read that new WWII novel, "THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLOR " and recommended it highly. At any rate, I got a copy from barnesandnoble.com and thought it was just terrific. Like your webpage, the novel offers a fascinating passage through WWII, while telling a stirring story of courage and dedication to doing wh t is right, no matter what the cost. But enough about that, my only suggestion for your page is to add more of the kind of stuff you already have. If something isn't broke it doesn't need fixing. Keep up the good work!

My husband, Clarence "Morty" Mortensen, was an ARM 2/c with VT50. He joined the Cowpens on May 30, 1945 in Hawaii. His pilot was Dana Overman and the turret gunner was "Helms". The following are some excerpts from his log. May 30- Left for Ford Is. to g aboard the USS Cowpens for our shakedown. June 1-One fighter came in too low and piled up--no injuries. June 6-No planes. New ones coming. No Mail again! June 13-The long awaited day arrives. Left Pearl Harbor with the Lexington & Han- cock CVs and 5 destroyer escorts. Headed for Leyte to join other units of the fleet. June 15-First crash of task group. SB2C goes in--only radioman got out. June 18-Getting ready for strikes on Wake Is. Corsair hits the drink! June 20-Made predawn s rike on Wake Is.--four 500pounders. Glide bombing. Two planes hit by ack ack, No injuries. Engine trouble on 2nd strike-had to return to ship. Lost one VF plane and pilot. Several from other ships went in. June 26-Arrived at San Pedro Harbor, for r fueling and taking on supplies. Got mail! June 30-Waiting to leave. Tired of sitting in port. July 1-Left Leyte with 3 CVs-Yorktown, ShangriLa, & Bon Homme Richard-- 2 CVLs-Independence & Cowpens--and escorts. Headed for Tokyo area to make strikes July 10. July 4 -More briefing for strike on July 10. Cut window until 11 p.m. July 9 - Cleaned up plane. All ready to knock the Hell out of the bastards. July 10-Made early strike on airfields in Tokyo area. One plane damaged. One Jap Dinah shot down. No injuries for us. July 14-Bad weather again but we flew anyway--200' ceiling.Too many clouds to see target so we went after shipping. Missed with bombs but strafed sub chaser. Really had a time with the fog. Second strike hit Muroran. Two planes hit. July 17-Bad weath r--strike called off when in planes ready to take off. Fire caused by belly tank--several guys burned--2 died later. July 19-20-Heading out to refuel. Still bad weather. Refueled and took on mail. Got 5 letters! July 24- Headed for Japan again. Ran i to storm of typhoon nature. Little bit rough! July 24- Ready for strikes on Kure. Made strike on Tone class cruiser at Kure. July 25- First strike jettisoned bombs because of bad weather. Second strike cancelled. July 26- Refueled and fooled around all day. July 28- On way back to attack shipping in Kure Harbor, made dive, but was hit on the way out. Camera I was using to take p ctures of attack saved me. Probably a 25 MM or 50MM explosive shell. Doc took quite a bit of shrapnel and wire out of my left hand and various parts of my body. July 29- Slept almost all day getting pennicillan every 4 hours--feeling quite a bit better July 30- Still sleeping. Rusty has my gear packed to go on hospital ship tomorrow. May get home pretty quick. July 31- Transferred to the hospital ship, USS Rescue, in a mail bag. Thus ended my husbands days on the Mighty Moo. He spent som time in the hospital on Guam, many months as an out-patient at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA. He graduated from CSUFresno. We were married in 1947 and had 3 children. He spent 35 years doing what he loved--teaching junior high woodshop. He retired n 1985 and we do alot of traveling with our 5th wheel travel trailer. He often speaks of the good times that they all had and his biggest regret was that he was unable to locate his pilot, who got the plane back to the carrier, until after he had died of lung cancer. But his memory lives on in our grandson who is named Dana. Thanks for this great site!

Larry lost his life by drowning after we were shot down by AA fire over Saipan and other turret gunners filled in until our Air Group was relieved July 1944. Prior to that date, LCR Grant who had been shot down uring our first Wake Island attack (rescued by a Sub about a week later), was replaced by LCR Robert Price, a great fighter pilot, who shepherded our Group until we returned Stateside. I don't even know what EIC stands for. He had 4 brothers in WW II, 2 N vy and 2 Army Air Corp. Please E-mail me any info any of you may have about him. He has 7 daughters and I'm trying to find any info about him on the Cowpens. He went in the Navy Spring of 1941 and was on the USS Palmer DMS-5 in the Atlantic until assigned to the EIC school. Please E-mail any info on him. Gates [in Texas]

I enjoyed seeing another site representing the light carriers. The last of these great ships, USS Cabot CVL28, will be scrapped in a few months unless we come to the rescue. Cabot will go to public auction in about90 days, and be sold to the highest bidde . The scrappers will be there, and will get her unless ECOSAT, of Miami, Florida or some other friendly enity is able to win the bid. If you want to help save the last light carrier, please visit the Cabot web site: www.divemiami.com Thank You!

He died two weeks ago, and I wanted to learn more about the ship and crew that were so much a part of his life. He didn't talk to us much about the war itself, just the good times on the ship, the camaraderie with the other guys, the ports--the non-painf l memories. I am sure that I will be back to this site.
