My name is Bobby Ray Barbee. I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 11, 1942. I joined the Navy on May 28, 1960, the day after graduating from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa. |
As a result of my scores on the entrance exams, I was classified to volunteer for submarine duty and the Navy's Nuclear Power Program. I was assigned the Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC - also called a "Job Code Number") of "9901." |
I attended eight weeks of Boot Camp in San Diego, California, assigned to Company 213. My company was composed of men from Oklahoma and New Mexico and we won every award except the Academic Award (I'll leave the interpretation of that up to you). I was the Company Yeoman, which was a great job to have. Since I made out the watchbills, I could get guys who didn't want to stand mid-watches to do my laundry. |
After Boot Camp I attended eight weeks of Machinist's Mate "A" School in Great Lakes, Illinois; graduating 8 out of 66. The best thing about this duty station was liberty in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. |
My next duty station was the eight-week Basic Submarine School (Class 219, Section 437) at the Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut, where I came out 33 of 122. |
Once all this schooling and training was completed I was finally ready for duty on my first Navy ship, the USS Tirante (SS-420) (click on link below). |
