Excellent history site.\, from a Vietnam, Gulf and Balkans vet. See my page for details on my book: "Ally to Adversary - An Eyewitness Account of Iraq's Fall from Grace," by Rick Francona, Naval Institute Press, May 1999 (ISBN 1557502811), is a new book on U.S.- Iraqi relations written by a Gulf war veteran and retired intelligence officer. The author raveled extensively throughout Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war as a liaison officer to the Iraqi armed forces, later served as Gen Schwarzkopf's Arabic interpreter during Desert Shield/Storm, and then became a principal author for DoD's after-action report o Congress on the conduct of the Gulf war.

Just a comment. As a kid (I am now 47) I lived in Hammond,IN which is next to Munster, home of C-45. As young boys we would ride our bikes out to the Nike base and talk to the soldiers through the fence. It was always very intriging and interesting. Durin the summer months we were out there daily. I think the guys looked forward to our visits. Most of us had brothers in the service somewhere else in the world and these guys gave us an idea as to what our brothers might be doing. We even got invited in one time for a mini tour. I don't know how that happened but it did, scouts or something like that. Anyway, that base was a big part of my childhood in N.W. Indiana. When I saw the shoulder patch on he first page a rush of that time came back to me. The men s ationed there, I am sure, would have rather been somewhere else, but to a group of young boys...they WERE the US ARMY !! I came upon this site while browsing and wanted to put in my 2 cents worth. DFW

Grew up in Gary, watched the sites grow and ebb. Wound up a platoon leader at C-32 in Porter. My grandfather ran a drug store at 3rd and Main in Hobart for 20 years, and as Hobart abuts Wheeler, perhaps some of the Vets got their medical needs there. T ured the sites in Lake County last Summer. A proud and sad time for me.

I was with HHQ Btry. 1st 65th Msl. Bn., at Site 7a, on the southern part of Okinawa. I was onl there for about 9 months because I had volunteered for field service in Vietam. The dates I was on Okinawa were 1/23/98-November 15, 1968. I love it, it was lik being in Hawaii, the weather was beautiful, women nice, and I just had a good time there. Made friends, drank alot....and everytime that I drive pass the site C46, in Munster, Indiana, pleasant menories flood my head and mind. When I was 0, 11, or 12 ear old, me and mine friends would bicycle pass the Munster site, never believing that one day I would b an RA in the Army, and then assigned to a Nike base, across the Pacific ocean. I remember that when I first got to the base, Site 7a, I immediately recog ized the same type of buildings that were over in Munster! Low one-storey buildings, painted light green, and some places, light blue...neat. And I still have a couple of myshoulder patches, un-use, yet! And I have about 5 or 6 pics of Site 7a(Charlie Btr . shared the site with us, great guys, we all got along)plus, a couple of weeks ago, I took my camcorder, and did a very nice job on C-46, in Munster, scanned the whole area of what was left of it. When I played the tape bak, it was beautiful....a record, neverto be loat, or destroyed...hmmm...maybe I should go back, and take some photos...hmmm.

Had the pleasure of commanding C47 at Wheeler and winning the Berry Award (Best ADA Battery Nationally two years running) with the men who really won it (F. Rameriez being one of many). The site was good times along with bad, but by far that site ran so ery well because of the men who server her, and the folks in the community who complimented what happened there. From "Tiny" who was our Santa at Christmas, to the teams who played ball there. And the severe snow storm, SNAP, ORE's, CMMIs, 100% on stat s and backing those who didn't, to FBI snafoos. Wasn't easy but it was challenging and rewarding. A very sincere "thankyou" from myself to all who served - not only for such a job well done, but for the dedication and loyalty they so sincerely and unsel ishly gave of themselves.

If someone wants me to contact him just e-mail me. I was an IFC operator at A-4-56 (AJAX) in Rehoboth, MAss, and C-4-56 (IMPRVD HERC) in Bristol, RI in late 1959 through early 1962. I worked in the IFC van as an ACQ operator. I am from Sweetwater, TX. I worked at Channel 12 in Sweetwater, TX before m 'tour' and at Channel 13 in Lubbock, TX afterwards. Good stuff folks. I recall several visits to Porter when I was Launcher Platoon Leader at C-50. I have been the Director of Plans, Operations and Training for the Illinois Army National Guard for the past 10 years. In my position one of many responsibilities is Force Structure. The Illinois Army National Guard had two Battalions , 1st Bn, 202d AD(Ajax then Herc) 2d Bn, 202d AD(Ajax). Ultimatley both were closed, the 1st Bn was our last in 74. In 1988 the ILARNG stood up the 1st Bn, 202d AD(Stinger). I had the extreme pleasure in commanding the Battalion from 1988-1990. The Battalion HHB is located in Kewanee Illinois with Batteries in Galva, Dixon, Marseilles, and Streator Illinois. It is curr ntly commanded by LTC Tom Bowman. In 1991 we had another opportunity to obtain a second Air Defense Battalion. We stood up the 2d Bn, 202d AD (Stinger). The HHB is currently in Chicago, along with one firing battery, North Riverside, and Crestwood, Illinois. The Battalion is commanded by TC Jim Hankins. Both Battalions are configured as Stinger/Man Portable Air Defense Systems(MANPADS). Three Batteries in each Battalion are equipped with M113 A2 Armored Personnel Carriers (APC). The other two Batteries in each Battalion are HMWV's. COL Randy Harrison Dir, Plns, Opns, Tng ILARNG Camp Lincoln 1301 N. Mac Arthur Blvd Springfield, Illinois 62702-2399

I found your site to be very informative. I did not know there was an abandoned missile site in the area. There is a growing preservationist movement here in Northwest Indiana. People are waking up to the fact that there is much in the area that needs preserving. I wish you the best of luck in your preservation efforts. Interesting WWW site - I never realized that there was such a widespread preservationist interest in preserving these infamous remnants of the Cold War. But to ensure a secure future, we must never forget the past. M.R.Brenz

Site c-47 should definately be preserved for historical purposes. Don't let the shortsighted ness of government bureaucrats lose our history for future generations.

I was happy to find so much on the Web about the Nikes, and now I see more is being added all the time. I am particularly interested in the "temporary" site called the Ogden Dunes site but actually over in Dune Park (now part of Portage.) That was repla ed by the one now occupied by the NPS. I assume the move was due to pressure from Midwest Steel, who didn't want a missile base on their land. (How ironic.) But it is very nice being able to find all this info on the Wheeler and other local sites and o Nikes in general, when books on the subject just are not in the libraries. It is disheartening that the local historical societies (of which I am a member of several) are so uninterested in Nike bases. I hope that something can still be done to save th "Wheeler" site and others. The idea to tear it down and then honor the servicemen with a plaque is a joke. They could have done that years ago and still can--without tearing the buildings down first! This county is in love with the concept of replacin old structures with new ones to honor history. Ha!

Greetings from near abandoned Nike site SF-37 in Newark (the San Francisco Bay Area) California. I live about 6 miles east of that site and 50 miles south/east of SF-88 (being restored). Thank you for letting us view your photos of C-47 and your efforts to preserve it as part of our national heritage. The site that I worked at, C-41 in Jackson Park in Chicago is all park again, not even a little marker. I feel good and bad about that all at the same time.

Stationed at C-47 1966-1967. I was an Integrated Fire Control Technician (24Q20. C-47 was designated as the nations best firing battery sometime between 1960-1965. The mayor of Wheeler at that time attended the firings at McGregor Range, Tx. C-47 was rate #1 after the tests. I have a "Nike Story" regarding C-47 posted on Ed Thelens web page under Nike Stories. I do have some pictures and will make them available. I think this site should be saved. You may want to try and enlist the Steel Mills as a suppor er of the project. Best regards - "First to Fire"
