RELATIVE TO THE U.S.S. CALIFORNIA (DLGN-36)

WHEREAS, The U.S.S. California (DLGN-36) was launched by Mrs. Richard M. Nixon, wife of the 37th President of the United States, on September 22, 1971, and

WHEREAS, This nuclear-powered guided-missile frigate is the fifth nuclear-powered surface warship and is specially designed as an air-defense missile ship to protect nuclear carriers from enemy attack; and

WHEREAS, The U.S.S. California becomes the sixth ship of the United States Navy to bear that illustrious name, the most famous of which was the battleship California (BB-44), a 32,000 ton vessel constructed at Mare Island, California, and commissioned in 1921, and

WHEREAS, The battleship California (BB-44) had its homeport in Long Beach, California, served as the flagship of the United States Pacific Fleet for 20 years, was sunk by Japanese forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, refloated in 1942, and by the close of the war it had earned seven battle stars, and the ship was retired in 1947 and struck from the rolls in 1959; and

WHEREAS, The new California (DLGN-36) displaces 10,000 tons, is 596 feet long, and is capable of speeds of over 30 knots, with nuclear refueling required every ten years; and

WHEREAS, The California will be commissioned early in 1974, with its compliment of 38 officiers and 524 crewmen, it will proceed to its homeport, San Diego, California; and

WHEREAS, California has a long and proud tradition of service to this nation, and its men and women have worn the Navy blue bravely and heroically both in peacetime and in war; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Joint Rules Committee of the Senate and the Assembly, That the Legislature welcomes the U.S.S. California (DLGN-36) upon her commissioning as an active combatant ship of the United States Navy, and further welcomes her and her crew to the Golden State of California with confidence that she will continue the proud record and fame of the othe ships of the line that have borne the illustrious name of U.S.S. California; and be it further

Resolved, That a suitably prepared copy of this resolution be transmitted to the commanding officer of the U.S.S. California.
