The second annual "On the Western Front" early war event at Fort MacArthur was a German success. This event saw 16 motivated Soldaten face off against a meager Allied force of about 9 men. Despite the lopsided forces, several interested scenarios developed during the course of the afternoon. Out of the 3 skirmshes that took place, 2 ended in stalemate and 1 was a German victory. All three were marked with heavy loses since they involved attacking the Allied forces, which were in defensive positions, by advancing over open ground. These small actions accurately reflected the devasting character of the Great War. Even with the mobility exhibited during the early stages of the war, the battles wrough havock on the opposing sides. The magnitude of the fighting eventually bogged down the combatants and static trench warfare became the predominant trend.
During the battle re-enactment at this event, the men experienced flanking maneuvers, frontal assaults, pincer attacks, probing actions, and close quater fighting within the fortifications. The combat that took place among the tunnels, gun pits, and alcoves of the World War 1 vintage installation was very poignat. The Soldaten worked very well within their asigned Gruppen, and the attacks were fairly well coordinated.
In addition to the skirmishes, various episodes of living history took place at the event. There was plenty of marching and drill to sharpen the skill and discipline of the troops. There was also a prototype issue of pay, thanks to the diligent efforts of Hermann and Sigismund. This event included a Musikfest in one of the subterranean galleries of the fort. Musikmeister Stefan and Musikerin Sigalinde attempted to hone the singing skills of the men. A good effort was made by most of the Soldaten and the patriotic songs could be heard echoing throught the fortifications.
The day was rounded out with a feast at the Alpine Village Inn. Hearty German cuisine accompanied by gallons of local hofbrau enhanced a high level of comradery. The festivities continued with the shownig of several World War 1 films. The films that received the liveliest reaction were some outrageous American propaganda pieces procured by Wolfgang.
The German forces must be commended for their dedication to the G.W.H.S. and their Kameraden. They set a good example for the Allies who just cannot get their act together. The success of every event this year is due to the highly motivated individuals within the German forces. With every event, the number of contributing Soldaten increases. The quality of the German contingent is now second to none within the G.W.H.S. Vielen Dank!
