In late 1925, a group of Black Men of Augusta, Georgia, who were the young, energetic professional vanguard of their day, had heard much of the new fraternal organization known as Omega Psi Phi, whose membership read like a Who's Who of the black leadership in America. After inquiring about the organization and learning of its purpose and goals, the men of Augusta decided to band themselves together and form a chapter of college educated men. In that regard, they formally petitioned the fraternity for a charter. The petition was approved by the Supreme Council, under the leadership of grand Basileus George L. Vaughn, and the charter was granted; thus the birth of Psi Omega Chapter was achieved. The charter members of Psi Omega were:
The chapter was very active until 1929 when, for whatever reasons, activities of the chapter came to a virtual standstill. The onset of the great depression of 1929 may have been a factor.
In June 1930, a young Omega man of zeal returned to his hometown from Alpha Chapter at Howard University, Washington D.C. to begin his dental practice. Upon learning of the inactivity of Psi Omega Chapter, he immediately invited his brothers to a call meeting at his office at 1141 12th Street. The chapter was reorganized at this meeting and has been active and one of the flagship chapters of the fraternity without interruption. The brother credited with reorganizing the chapter was Brother James E. Carter, Jr. In 1943 Brother Carter was elected Keeper of Finance for the 7th District, a post he held with distinction for 31 years, retiring in 1974. He remained an active Omega man and life member for 68 years, until his passing in 1993.
In 1931, Brother Herbert F. Anderson, a charter member of Beta Chapter of Lincoln University, moved to the city to pastor Christ Presbyterian Church, and joined Psi Omega. He remained an active member until he passed in 1967, serving as an Omega man for a total of 33 years.
Psi Omega, during the 30's and 40's was a very active entity in the city and was instrumental in establishing the 7th district in 1939. Psi Omega hosted district meetings in 1956 and 1969. It also hosted District Council Meetings and two State Meetings
