The basic function of the Royal New Zealand Air Force is to provide forces that can be employed to:

Preserve the security and integrity of New Zealand, New Zealand's 200 mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and the Cook Islands, Niue and the Tokelaus.

Be able to mount an effective military response to any low-level contingency within our area of strategic concern. The area of strategic concern includes mainland Australia and extends north through Papua New Guinea to Kiribati, east to the Cook Islands, and south to the Ross Dependency in Antarctica.

Remain prepared to meet all obligations to international military treaties.

Maintain an ability to operate in our southern maritime region, and give logistic support to New Zealand's activities in Antarctica.

Contribute to the maintenance of peace and stability in South-East Asia by continuing to maintain an active role in the Five Power Defence Arrangement with Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Malaysia.

Provide disaster relief assistance, resource protection, search and rescue and medical evacuation services in New Zealand and in the South Pacific.

Promote peace and international security through contributions to United Nations Peacekeeping operations.
