His daughter's obituary (Melissa Harriet Brown)on May 5, 1905, states that her father served in the US Navy during the War of 1812. His ship was captured by the British and he spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in England. This veteran was born in assachusetts but lived in New York City where Melissa Harriet Brown was born on February 2, 1830. In the War of 1812, he was in New Orleans, Louisanna area from 1808-1810. He was called "Old Fuss & Feathers" because of his attention to dress and military proceedures. He and his commanding officer were constantly at odds and blantenly honest. If he wer in the service today, I don't think he would have made General because of his telling off his commanding officer. He's the only American General to never have lost a battle and that's what made him good. He was made a major general for his heroic service in the battles of Chippewa and Lundy's Lane, and was sent to the Canadian frontier. He led his regiment in the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 13, 1812 in which the American forces were repulsed with heavy losses and Scott was taken prisoner, and xchanged a year later. He married twice 1)Lucy Baker and had two children (Lucy died in childbirth of 2nd child and 2)Maria Dehart Mayo and had seven children. Out of the nine children only five survived to adulthood and married.

William E. Daniel was born July 27, 1794 in Georgia. He died May 29, 1864 in Abbeville Co., S.C. He married first Margaret Hall who died in 1823. Second, he married Lavicey Moore December 24, 1826. He volunteered in Abbeville Co., S.C. for the War of 1812 January 13, 1814 and was discharged July 13, 1814. He served under Capt. Bowen. He received two Bounty Land Grants. One (#12787) for 80 acres in 1850 and another one (#38925) in 1855 for 80 acres. Any information on him appreciated.

Ephraim enlisted on 16 Sept 1813 in Russell County, VA in Lt. Andrew Caldwell's Company of the Military Infantry 72nd Regiment of Virginia Militia and marched to Norfolk, Virginia where they were attached to the 4th Regiment. He was then transfered to Cap . George W. Camp's Company of the Military Infantry, 4th Regiment of Virginia Militia on the 22nd of October 1813 and served as a cannoneer in the artillery on Craney's Island. He was honorably discharged on 13 Mar 1814. The Federal government granted hi 80 acres of land in New Mexico for his service in the war but he never established his claim. After his return to Russell County, Virginia, his brother Abednego Kiser was drafted or enlisted, and Ephraim told him he was a married man with a family and offered to take his place since he was a single man, but Abednego replied, "No brother, you've se ved your turn, I'll serve mine." Abednego went on and died at Norfolk of fever and is buried there. Ephraim was born in 1790, Shenandoah County, VA, son of Joseph & Susannah (Stacy) Keyser/Kiser. He married 31 Aug 1815 in Russell County, Virginia to Mary Sutherland, daughter of James and Sarah (Buchanan) Sutherland, her father being an immigrant from Sc tland. Mary died 21 Mar 1858 and Ephraim on 11 Oct 1885, Jesse Mills, Russell County, Virginia. Both were members of the Baptist Church and are buried on a cliff on the south bank of the Clinch River just above the present town of Carbo, Russell County, irginia.

William was born in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1760. He was a veteran of the American Revolution serving in various militia companies from 1775-1782 in the Northwestern Theater. He was involved in the construction of Fort McIntosh (now Beaver, Pennsy vania) and Fort Laurens (now Bolivar, Ohio) He was wounded in 1782 at Crawford's defeat and enlisted no more. He received a land grant in Ohio but sold it and moved to Boone County, Kentucky. After the war crimes committed at Frenchtown (now Monroe, Mi higan, the Battle of the River Raisin) namely the massacre of wounded American Soldiers, he enlisted in Dudley's Regiment in Madison County to drive the British once again from our shores. Kentucky bleed as the butchered soldiers were her sons. Dudley's regiment was sent to the relief of Fort Meigs (now Perrysburg, Ohio) with a large majority of the his command captured or massacred, due to his ineptitude as an officer. William survived. He died in Madison County, Kentucky on September 11, 1866 at age 06.

Joseph McMinn was enlisted in the first reg. of the Maryland volunteers at Williamsport in July of 1814 under command of Captain Wolf until Oct 13,1814 when he was under the command of Captain William Curtis. John Wyatt Hodnett held a Captain's commission in the Georgia troops during the War of 1812 and served as a spy on the Indians in western Georgia and eastern Alabama. During his life and on his tombstone he was referred to as Major. He and his wife Eliz beth are buried in a churchyard in Haralson, Coweta County, Georgia.

Mr Garrison was my ggg grandfather's oldest son. His father David Charles Garrison was a Revolutionary War veteran serving in the Maryland Artillary, 1st Company of Matrosses Province, Md. The son, Charles Barksdale was born 1778 and died 1853 in Greenvi le SC. A company muster roll for the period Dec 1814 to March 1815 lists him as a Captain and was during the time of encampment at Georgetown SC. He is referenced in marriage notices for two daughters in Nov and Dec 1848 and in the death notice for anot er in 1846 as General Garrison. Would appreciate any information about the regiment referenced above.

Charles Wesley Flowers was a private in the Company of Artillery commanded by Captain John Morgan in the Regiment of Virginia Volunteers commanded by Colonel Thomas Baloo in the War of 1812: That his services commenced on or about the first day of August 1814 for the term of 6 mo. and that he continued in actual service in said war until about the 4th day of January 1815 and that on account of sickness and the near approach of his term of service he was honorably discharged at Camp Holly Springs in Henri o County in the State of Virginia on the said 4th day of January, 1815. Charles further deposes and says that he was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Young of Tennessee Drafted Malitia, that he was attached to no Regiment, but served as foll ws in the war between the United States and the Creek Nation of Indians, in the year 1814, for the term of 6 mo. and continued in actual service in said war for the term four mo. and thirteen days, as follows, towit, mustered into service at Knoxville in he State of Tennessee, thence marched to Lookout Mountain in the Cherokkee Nation, thence back to Camp Baxter under Lieutenant Vinyard for the purpose of building Commissary or Store Houses, and there honorably discharges on the day of May, 1814. P.S. I and others of Charles Wesley Flowers descendants are searching for the names of Charles's father and mother.

Wright Perkins was born in NC about 1780. He married Jane Wilson on Feb 24, 1800 in Richmond Co., NC. They moved to Hickman Co. TN after 1809 but before the War of 1812. During the War of 1812, he served in a unit of Dickson Co. TN (though he lived in ickman Co., but near the border of Dickson). In the late 1840's, Wright and Jane moved to Bastrop Co. TX, along with several grown children and their families. Wright died Apr 1, 1851 in Bastrop Co. Jane died after 1860, and last resided with one of th ir children (James R. Perkins) in Fayette Co. TX. Jane filed a pension application after Wright's death, and this information is recorded in the work of Mary Smith Fay on the War of 1812 Veterans in Texas.

Michael fought against the British in the Battle of New Orleans on 8 Jan 1815. He enlisted twice buring the War of 1812. First from August 1812 to 31 January 1813 and was discharged at Vincennes, Ind. He was again drafted in the Ky. Milita on 20 Nov 1 14 and discharge on 20 May 1815. He was in Capt Blackburn's Company 1st Regt. 2nd Brigade of the Illinois Mounted Vols in the Blackhawk war of 1832. He enlisted as a private at Paris, Ill 19 Jun 1832 and mustered out 15 Aug 1832. Michael bought 80.75 Ac es 2 miles north of Marshall (Wabash Township) on west side of state hiway one, south of Big Creek and east of old Indian Treaty Boundary. On 25 Sep 1837 he bought 40 more acres 1 1/2 miles northeast on east side of state road one. On 26 Oct 1838 Michae bought 40 acres in Marshall Township Clark Co. 2 miles south of Marshall on state road one. on the north boundary of Lincoln Trail State Park. On 31 Oct 1851 he received a warrant for 160 Acres in Noble Township, 4 miles west northwest of Olney, Richlan Co., Ill. where Plesent Ridge church is located. He sold this 160 acres in 1862 for $1000.00. (normal land prices at this time were $1.25 an acre). In May 1855 he was in Christian Co., Ill., where he applied for and received 120 acres in Jan 1856. The location of the land is unknown, but probably in another state and the grant was probably sold immediately as was normal in those times.

According to a handwritten letter from a Bennington, VT relative written 12/14/1930, John Carrier of the Troy, NY area, served in the War of 1812 and was given either the Carrier family farm or the Brainard family farm for his services in this war.

Matthew Ray was a Colonel in the War of 1812. Not sure where he fought but by trade he made farm tools and axes. He did mention what a hardship it was for his family while he was away. Memorial Forrest (born 1783) enlisted 10 September 1814 in Lt Col Andrew Porter’s Kentucky Volunteer Militia in the War of 1812 and served as a Captain. He received $40 per month pay. He died while on active duty at Ft. Gratiot, MI, 21 days before his e listment was up. He probably died of disease since the sanitary conditions at military installations were appalling. The war had ended 24 December 1814, but the remote outposts were not aware of it because of the slow communication system of the time.< r>

He also applied for a pension in 1871 at age 81 in Talladega Co., Alabama. After is death in 1873, his wife Cynthia Mullins-Tyler applied for Widows Pension,in 1885 she was 83 yrs old. MILITARY RECORD: During the War of 1812, Peterson Burge enrolled himself as a volunteer to be in readiness to serve a six month tour, if needed, for the term of two years in the Virginia Volunteer Cavalry from Sussex County, Virginia. He was called into service in early 1814 and continued in actual service for a term of two months while being commanded by Capt. William Peters under the command of Maj. Thomas Hunton at Norfolk, Virginia. By a General Order, he was honorably discharged from the service on March 18, 1814 at Norfolk, Virginia. His term of service having expired after the campaign at Norfolk, he joined a company of cavalry commanded by a Capt. Ross of Dinwiddie County and, in September, was again called into service. His company was stationed at Petersburg, Virginia and, after a term of one month, he was again honorably discharged. LAND GRANTS: On November 21, 1850, in Wilson County, Tennessee, Peterson Burge filed a declaration to obtain bounty land, which he was entitled to, for military service of the United States in the War of 1812. This declaration was sworn to before Justice of the Peace William Holmes. The statment was received and certified by Josiah Mclain, Clerk of the Wilson County Court. This land was claimed under a law passed by Congress on September 28, 1830 granting land to veterns of the War of 1812.

Russell Jones served as a sergeant in 11 Regiment (Hickey's) Louisiana Militia in the war of 1812. We have a photocopy of his discharge papers stating he rendevoused at New Orleans on Dec 25 1814 and was discharged on Jan 8 1815, presumably straight after the batle of New Orleans. James Hooper, Jr. Was born July 5, 1804 and served as a powder monkey aboard the Schooner Comet under the command of Captain Boyle during the War of 1812. He was a member of the General Society of the War of 1812 in Md. According to a newspaper intervie which he granted in 1894 (he lived to a ripe old age and died in March of 1898), his father James Hooper was an officer aboard this ship also. I have been told that my great-great-great grandfather was George W. Armistead who was the commander of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. I would like to find out if I am related to Lewis Adison(?)Armistead who led Picket's charge in the Civil War. I w s told that George W. Armistead had a son, Martin Armistead. In the history of Fountain County, Indiana I found my ancestor listed as Captain Samuel Gass, listed as a veteran of the war of 1812. It said he had a marker and was buried near Wallace, Indiana. I cannot find the marker or cemetary at this time. I do now he did fight in the war of 1812 and stayed in the military.

Info supplied by genealogist, Robert Batts, Henry County, Kentucky, and was transcribed Apr. 28, 1992 "...from the auditor's office shows that Thomas Burchett Batts served from Aug. 17 to Dec. 31, 1812, as a private in Capt. David Adams' Company of Kentucky Militia. The veteran ... that he volunteered in Newcastle, Henry County, KY and that he was discha ged there. He was granted bounty land for service of 30 acres on Warrant #25380 issued under the act of Sept. 23, 1850. He was allowed 80 additional acres on Warrant #41451, issued under the act of Mar. 3, 1855. He applied for a pension on Oct 9, 1871. His c lim was allowed on certificated #16128 issued Apr. 26, 1872. The rate was eight dollars per month, act of Feb. 14, 1871 Louisville, KY. agency. He died before receiving any payment, and the amount to which he was entitled at death was paid to his childr n. Rank was a Private. He served under Captains Farrar and Cunningham in the 8th U. S. Regiment which was under Colonel Manning. The 8th later became the 7th and he served under Captain E. Montgomery's Company. Enlisted the 14th day of August 1812 (place nknown) and was discharged 13th day of August 1817 at Camp Montgomery, Alabama Territory. In 1813 was wounded at Pointe Petre, GA. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE HE WOULD HAVE ENLISTED AT - ON THE DISCHARGE IT STATES THAT HE ENLISTED IN NORTH CAROLINA. In a county biography it states Levi was a soldier in the War of 1812, along with two of his brothers David and Caleb Babb. They were the sons of Thomas and Martha Ewing Babb of Greene Co., Tn., have been unable to find documentation of Levi's service an would like to find any information of his service. Levi was born 1788 in Greene Co., TN, married 1808 to Susanna Dillon, in 1826 they removed to Vermilion Co., IL, they were the the parents of 10 children. Levi married 2nd in 1839, Elizabeth Prevo/Provo, they were the parents of three children. Levi died 1872 in Vermilion Co., and is buried in Yankee Point Cemetery.

Reubenl and father Moses (and possibly brother Daniel) served in War of 1812. Here is a what Reuben says in his narrative: "We were ordered to meet at Batavia, then to Buffalo. On our arrival at Buffalo there was a call for volunteers to go over to Fort Erie, under General Porter, and take the batteries that were besieging the fort,. My father and myself volunteered and assis ed in taking the batteries and in capturing 500 prisoners. This was September 17, 1814. After this we were discharged, receiving $8.00 per month for our services."

GEORGE LAFOLLETT served as a Pvt. in the War of 1812 in Capt. N. Jonathan Waddle's (Waddell's) Co., 4th Regt., Col. Samuel Bayless's East Tennessee Militia. Some records indicate George was drafted, others show he volunteered. George entered the militar on 13 Nov. 1814 and was discharged 26 May 1815. In 1850, George's widow Elizabeth Gann LoFollett filed the first of several declarations for a pension. I would like to correspond with persons related to the LaFollett or Gann families.
