Half Moon's visit to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
More scenes from Guantanamo Bay
The ship deployed to 'Gitmo' once every two years
We were lucky and were scheduled to go in the winter
Night time shark fishing was popular while on H.E.P.
Petty Officer John Marcy on the fantail just after passing under the Verrazano Bridge
Another shot of John Marcy, this time firing the rifle bolo to pass a 'messenger' line to another ship
John again, working on the fire control system
Marcy gives the Half Moon's punching bag a good workout
The 'real" Ice Patrol - Ocean Station Bravo
O.S. Bravo in the winter months was a dreaded assignment
Half Moon pulled this Bravo Patrol in February, 1965
Removing the accumulated ice was a matter of survival
The ice could build up to the point where it was so heavy that it could actually capsize the ship
Compare this picture of the iced-up Hedgehog Mount with Img035 below, taken in warmer weather.
The ice develops from a mixture of frozen spray and precipitation
'Hump Day' was a major event on Ocean Station
It marked the half-way point of a patrol
It was usually Holiday Routine and we had a party on the mess deck with singers, musicians, comedians and two cans of brew per man. Here Fire Control Technician Bob Premo plays some of our favorite tunes on his electric guitar.
Part of the Thanksgiving Day meal on O.S. Delta in 1965
On patrol on one of the four Ocean Stations
The 4 stations (Bravo, Charlie, Delta and Echo)
Served as floating weather stations
and Aids to Navigation for trans-Atlantic aircraft
Other duties included Search and Rescue. Here Half Moon performs drills with the cutter Owasco while relieving station on O.S. Delta.
Ditch and Rescue was another mission we were trained to be able to handle in case a plane got in serious trouble and had to put down at sea.
MEDEVACs of ill passengers/crew of ships in the area were fairly common and we had to be able to transfer the patient from one ship to anoither.
In the last few years, Oceanographic research was a major mission
Half Moon's home port in 1964-65 was Staten Island, NY
Scene's from Base St. George on Staten Island, NY
Half Moon's fire control shack and radar
Hedgehogs were an ASW weapon. Compare this photo with Img017 above where the mount is covered with ice.
Ready for a 'high line' exercise on O.S. Bravo
Half Moon regularly practiced towing othe ships.
