Task 1: Perform Mouth-to-Mouth Resuscitation

TEST CONDITIONS: Given a casualty who is unconscious and does not appear to be breathing. The candidate is not in a chemical environment.

TEST STANDARDS: Perform, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation following the correct sequence. Continue giving breaths at the rate of about 10 to 12 per minute (1 breath every 5 seconds) until the casualty starts to breathe on his or her own, you are relieved by a qualified person, or you are too tired to go on.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR POINT: Resuscitation Training Mannequin (DVC 08-15), alcohol, swabs or cotton balls, field table, clipboard, pen, chlorine disinfectant, and FB Form 20-5-R.

SITE SETUP: Place the mannequin, face down, on a poncho, and place alcohol and cotton balls on the field table.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES "Let me have your attention. At this point, you are required to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, following the correct sequence. Continue giving breaths at the rate of about 10 to 12 per minute (1 breath every 5 seconds) until the casualty starts to breathe on his or her own, you are relieved by qualified person, or you are too tired to go on."

"Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is to be simulated with this mannequin. The mannequin's mouth and nose have been cleaned with disinfectant. When I give the command BEGIN, start the task. Continue until I tell you to stop."

TASK 1: PERFORM MOUTH-TO-MOUTH RESUSCITATION.

SCORER STATES: "The casualty is unconscious."

Performed the following actions in sequence.

a. Rolled the casualty onto his or her back, if necessary.

b. Opened the airway using the head-tilt/chin-lift method.

c. Checked for breathing within 3 to 5 seconds by placing an ear over the casualty's mouth and looking toward his or her chest.

SCORER STATES: "The casualty is not breathing, and the airway is open."

d. Give breaths to ensure an open airway.

SCORER STATES: "The chest is rising."

e. Checked for a pulse, for 5 to 10 seconds using your first two fingers, in the groove in the casualty's throat beside the adam's apple.

SCORER STATES: "There is a pulse and the casualty is not breathing. "

f. Continued mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, at the rate of about 10 to 12 breaths per minute.

SCORER ALLOWS CANDIDATE TO CONTINUE FOR ABOUT ONE MINUTE AND ANNOUNCES: "THE CASUALTY IS BREATHING."

NOTE: This task has been modified for EIB test only. Allow the candidate to proceed until you are satisfied that he has performed the task correctly.

Task 2: Apply a Tourniquet

Task 3: Prevent Shock

TEST CONDITIONS: Given a casualty who has a bleeding wound of the arm or leg. The casualty is breathing. The casualty's first-aid packet is available, and the materials to improvise a pressure dressing and to elevate the extremity are also available.

TEST STANDARDS:

1. Take appropriate action to control bleeding of a wound, following the correct sequence. Apply the field dressing over the wound, ensuring that the sides of the dressing are sealed and that the dressing does not slip. Make sure the application of the field and pressure dressing does NOT have a tourniquet-like effect.

2. Apply a tourniquet that stops bright red bleeding. The tourniquet stick does not unwind.

3. Attempt to prevent shock without causing further injury to the casualty.

NOTE: For EIB testing purposes, a time standard of 4 minutes is required for test standards 1 and 2.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR POINT: First-aid dressings, cravats, poncho, load-bearing equipment, KelvarŠ PASGT helmet, field table, stopwatch, clipboard, pen, moulage for the selected wound, mannequin (DVC 08-15), and FB Form 20-6-R.

SITE SETUP: Ensure the mannequin or Soldier playing the part of the casualty is on a poncho in BDUs with buttons, belt, and boot laces secure, and is wearing load-bearing equipment and KevlarŠ PASGT helmet. Use the same field dressing repeatedly for economy. Have materials available for a pressure dressing (wadding and cravat or a strip of cloth). Apply the field and pressure dressing. Use a moulage or mark a place on the casualty's arm or leg to simulate a wound.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

"Let me have your attention. At this point, you will be required to put on a field and pressure dressing, put on a tourniquet, and prevent shock to properly treat a casualty."

"Evaluate a casualty who has a bleeding wound to the leg."

"The casualty has a pulse and is breathing. You are NOT in a chemical environment. A first-aid packet and wadding material are next to the casualty. After applying the appropriate dressings, if they fail to control the bleeding you must apply a tourniquet and treat the casualty for shock. You have 4 minutes in which to apply the field and pressure dressings. The wound is not a fracture."

Task 1: Put on a Field and Pressure Dressing

"All measures have failed to control the bleeding. Direct pressure and elevation have been unsuccessful. Begin your next course of action."

All candidates must put on a tourniquet.

After the candidate completes the tourniquet, the grader checks to ensure the tourniquet stick does not unwind.

"Casualty has symptoms of shock."

After the candidate completes step 1-4b on the scorecard, the scorer asks the candidate;

"What other steps would you perform at this time?"
