Dear Bruce,
I am the 'unofficial' e-mail contact for inquiries regarding the Association of the USS Warrington (DD-383). This organization was formed
in the late 1980's by some of the remaining survivors of the sinking of the
Somers Class destroyer USS Warrington (DD-383) in September, 1944. The former commanding officer of the Warrington, CDR.
Robert A. Dawes Jr., has written and published a book about the Warrington
sinking entitled "The Dragon's Breath - Hurricane at Sea". The book was
published in 1997 by Naval Institute Press, 2062 Generals Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401. Their toll-free phone number for book orders is
1-800-233-8764. The Skipper (CDR. Dawes) is president of the Association,
which is open to surviving shipmates and relatives of USS Warrington crewmembers. Dues are a nominal $10/year. The Skipper also puts out a
semi-monthly newsletter about happenings among the remaining survivors, and will send it to anyone related to a Warrington shipmate. He also maintains
a "Muster List" of the names and addresses of members of the Association to which members are entitled. Inquiries about membership in the organization,
surviving shipmates, or other DD-383 related questions may be directed to the Skipper at:
CDR Robert A. Dawes, Jr.
Or, they can e-mail me at:
rjreynol@usgs.gov and I will attempt to
answer their questions, or at the very least, send them essentially the
same information that is posted here.
Interested parties should explain who they are (ie. what crewmember they
are related to) and that they would like their name added to the
mailing list for the newsletter. By the way, the book is very well done and
is worth having, since it explains the whole sequence of events that led to
the Warrington's sinking. My involvement in the book stems from the fact
that my uncle, a SF1c, was one of those who perished during the sinking.
Thank you for posting this e-mail at your web site.
Regards,
Richard J. Reynolds
