I landed at Bien Hoa 1 a.m. 1-Dec-67 along with the entire 3/187th Infantry Regiment "RAKKASANS", part of the 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. Three days later we convoyed to Phuoc Vinh in Binh Duong Province and established our Battalion base camp.
e operated throughout the III Corps area, including War Zone D, the Iron Triangle and Hobo Woods. During the first half of Tet Offensive 1968 my company (B) performed continual search and destroy missions in Gia Dinh Province from Saigon south to Long An
rovince west of the Nha Be River, the area was almost entirely covered with rice paddies. The second half of Tet we spent in Long Khanh Province performing missions from Binh Hoa to Xuan Loc and around Black Horse, while there we humped through rubber pla
tations, banana groves, bamboo stands and thick heavy jungle. After Tet the 3/187th returned to Binh Duong Province for a short time to earn its first Valorous Unit Citation recieved in Viet Nam for actions near Phuoc Vinh. Subsequently the 3/187th commen
ed operations west of Cu Chi in Tay Ninh Province. Always on the move, in Hua Nghia Province we earned the first Presidential Unit Citation recieved in Viet Nam by the "RAKKASANS" for The Battle of Trang Bang, which took place on the Parrot's Beak portion
of the Cambodian border. In late September 1968 we returned to Phuoc Vinh and the 3/187th commenced to relocate to our new base camp in I-Corps. The Battalion flew out of Phuoc Vinh on C-130's and landed at Phu Bai, from there we convoyed to and through H
e and finally arrived at Camp Evans, home of the "RAKKASANS" new base camp. The remainder of my tour was relatively
calm compared to actions I was involved with in III-Corps, although we did continue to engage in small skirmishes, fire-fights and ambushes. Patrol, click, O.P., -60, L.P., point, -16, flank, rear guard, RPG, 4.2, NDP, -79, incoming, 81, NVA, sit-rep, med

Loved your site. I traveled to Vietnam in May 2000 to visit the exact spot where my uncle, Wayne K. Smith, was killed. Uncle Wayne was a machine gunner in "A" Co. 2/502nd and he was KIA on 8 May 1970 at YD495054 at 0910 hours. I am seeking anyone who may
ave known him, or knows someone who might have served with him. I don't as yet know which platoon he was in. Most of the A Shau Valley has changed. There is no more triple canopy jungle at YD495054. Now it is just rolling hills covered with elephant grass
All of the trees were either lost to logging after the war or as a result of Agent Orange. I was at YD495054 on 8 May 2000 for the 30th anniversary of my uncle's death. I made a 16mm documentary of the trip and I also have several photos for anyone inter
sted in seeing them.
Another soldier named Pete Nolan was killed in the same ambush as my uncle that day. I have located, through the internet, about four vets who were there on that day, but they were good friens of Nolan's and didn't remember my uncle. Apparently the NVA
mbushed three different 2/502nd platoons that day. I pray that someone will read this who knew my uncle. I have yet to find out EXACTLY what happened to him. Uncle Sam lists his death as caused by small arms fire. Then why was his metal casket welded shut
I wish I knew more.
By the way, Vietnam, well, Saigon, is filled with a bunch of no-good wannabe con artists looking to milk an American out of a buck in any way possible. I guess some things never change.
WELCOME HOME VETS. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Hello Capt.
Interesting story- I was in Vietnam exactly one year before you. RECON 1 / 506 was securing the perimeter of FB Sword when it was attacked by sappers in Feb. 69- we repulsed the attack and followed blood trails down into a base area the next day. We mov
d into the A Shau soon after, and were ambushed outside of FB Vehgel.
The A Shau was very spooky in 69, and there was much contact with the NVA, and many FB's were attacked (Currahee, Bertchesgarden, Eagle's Nest)
FB Airborne was completely overrun. After Hamburger Hill, we spent the rest of the summer chasing the NVA until they moved us up to the DMZ, where I took out my last five man RECON patrol in late Oct. 69.
My father passed away last March- he was the Bn commander of the 3/187 in 1947-48 in Japan.
Welcome Home Trooper- I am glad both of us are out of that place!
AIRBORNE!
