The Gate City Guard was formed in 1854 when a group of patriotic citizens of Atlanta met and decided that they would organize a military company to help the police force gain control of disorderly individuals, who were rampart on Decatur Street. In 1857 they petitioned for a charter under the name of The Gate City Guard.
This unit was useful in putting down disturbances, both in Atlanta and neighboring towns. The charter excluded them from ordinary duties as "militia men". These citizen soldiers had to furnish their own uniforms.
