In Memory Of

"Farewell Larry"
16 January 2000
A few words from Barela's Vietnam partner and friend Steve Barnaby:
We really did have a special relationship. Although we were from different cultural backgrounds, we really seemed to understand each other. In Vietnam we developed this bond of silent communication that was somewhat mystical.
We never had to say many words. A glance of the eyes or a head nod in one direction or another was sufficient to determine a strategic on-the-spot decision during a firefight. His skill at walking point was beyond compare. A brief, flickering smile or a cautionary glance signaled the path ahead. We worked together like a machine in combat situations, yet few if any others even realized it. Psychologists would have had a field day studying us as a case in classic mental telepathy. We also understand how each other felt personally about the war and our places in it.
I was curious to see how that communications link would work after 30 years when we met in San Diego. I still remember us sitting next to each other in San Diego and Colorado Springs, never having to say much but always in communications.
I also remember standing together for the last time getting our pictures taken, arms around each other, the hug and the look in his eye. Earlier in the week he had briefly mentioned the state of his health. That final look confirmed my worst suspicions. As I traveled to the airport, I tried to put it out of my mind, chalking it up to my imagination. I learned the power of listening and observation from Barela, something I try to pass on, not always successfully, to corporate executives.
He was like a special brother. Considering the relationship, words can't express my feeling of loss.
With the passing of Barela and Pitcairn, I realize more than ever how special we all are to each other.
