A.R.A. Gral. Belgrano
Dedicated to the heroes on board of our beloved C-4 Entering Argentine service in 1951, the ARA Gral Belgrano (C-4) cruiser was a Brooklyn Class Cruiser (ex-USS Phoenix, CL-46). Having participiated in the Liberator Revolution against Juan Perón, it was, at that time, a very powerful unit. It was also the first unit to be fitted with SAM´s in the Argentine Naval Service in 1968.
On May 2th, 1982, the Cruiser was part of Task Group 79.3 (Flag Officer, Captain Elías Bonzo, ARA), patrolling near the Burwood Bank, some 35 NM S of the British-imposed "Exclusion Zone". In the afternoon, it was sunk by two torpedoes from HMS Conqueror, a nuclear sub. Of 1093 crew members, 323 died, either on board or at sea. The crew was rescued later by DDG Piedra Buena, ATF Francisco de Gurruchaga, and Polar Transport Bahía Paraíso (all Argentine Navy) and Chilean Ship Piloto Pardo. Later, some bodies were recovered by Russian Ships. This incident could perhaps be assesed as a Grave Breach of the Laws of War (as defined by the Geneva and Hague Conventions), but no effective prosecutions have taken place yet. (I know this comment might upset some UK people but that's my honest view of the subject)
