Alaska is located in the northwest corner of North America. It is bordered on the east by Canada on the north by the Arctic Ocean, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. To its west is Russia.
The name Alaska comes from the Aleut Indians and means "great land" or "mainland."
In 1741, Vitus Bering and Alexi Chirikov discovered Alaska and the Aleutian Islands for Russia.
The Ubited States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867. It was called "Seward's Folly," because it cost two cents an acre.
