Oregon is called the beaver state because of the beaver skins sold during the fur-trading days. Many Indian tribes were the first to live in Oregon. Then parts of Oregon were claimed by Spain, England, Russia, and finally the United States.
John Astor, an Americam fur trader, began the American settlement of Oregon and became known as the "Father of Oregon." After the Civil War, many people moved west to settle in Oregon.
