Sea tours as enlisted include USS VULCAN AR-5, Staff, Commander, Service Squadron FOUR, Serving Temporary Additional Duty tours in ten ships of the Service Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, USS BETELGEUSE AK-260, and USS JOHN R. PIERCE DD-753. Shore tours as enlisted include Staff, Commander, Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland and Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While serving in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Signalman Chief DOUGHERTY was selected for Warrant Officer and subsequently received his appointment to Warrant Boatswain.
Sea tours as an Officer include USS HERMITAGE LSD-34, where he served as Ship's Boatswain, USS MOUNT WHITNEY LCC-20 as First Lieutenant, USS PUGET SOUND (AD-38) as First Lieutenant, USS TRENTON (LPD-14) as First Lieutenant. In November of 1981, Commander DOUGHERTY assumed command of USS ADROIT (MSO-509). In December of 1983, Commander DOUGHERTY reported for duty as Executive Officer of USS RALEIGH LPD-1.
Commander DOUGHERTY was the Commissioning Commanding Officer of Assault Craft Unit FOUR. Shore tours as an Officer include Staff, Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic as Headquarters Maintenance Officer. While serving at SACLANT, he received his commission as an Ensign, Limited Duty Officer (DECK). Sub board of Inspection and Survey Atlantic as Damage Control and Deck Inspector. Commander DOUGHERTY laterally transferred to the Unrestricted Line in October 1980.
Commander DOUGHERTY has two sons. A third son, Terrence, died while in his First Class Year at the United States Naval Academy (Class of 1978).
Commander DOUGHERTY retired from active duty 01 August 1988, and currently resides in Panama City Beach, Florida.
