In all conflicts and wars it is the foot soldier who wins or loses the battle. The Navy and Air Forces can sail or fly away to repair, reload, or regroup. The infantry soldier has no such alternative. He must meet head on the immense challenge of an enemy dedicated to holding his ground. The 96th experienced this on Leyte and Okinawa during World War II. On Okinawa alone,1506 were killed in action, 5912 were wounded, and 2817 suffered from non combat related injuries. This all in an intense 3 month effort where the Japanese knew it was the last stop before American forces invaded the homeland. This site is therefore dedicated to telling the story of the 96th and its men and mission. It is necessary that this be done so that what was accomplished for our very freedom and way of life will NEVER be forgot. It is our hope to show every aspect of the 96th soldier from training to the combat experience in an easy and organized site.
The 96th has been a large part of my families life as my Father was a member from February 1943 till September 1945 at the wars end. There is a memorial tribute to Dad included in this site along with pictures and other items saved by my Mother over the years. His story is only one of the many thousands who served with the Deadeyes. Brave men who answered the call to duty in the last patriotic war.
This site will gladly accept any and all pictures, memorabilia, personal accounts, and other items related to the World War II era, as it relates to the 96th Infantry or the campaigns on Leyte and Okinawa by any combat unit. This will enable us to present the best possible and complete record for future generations to examine and study. Any items you wish to have used will be returned after being scanned for presentation here. Please contact us at 614-670-4082 or email us for inclusion of your articles.
