The entire Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies are on line, or will be on line soon, courtesy of the Making of America Collection at Cornell University. They also have the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies.
Here is an example of the reports found in the OR. This one is for the 1st Minnesota Regiment from the Battle of Gettysburg (II Corps (Hancock), 2nd Div. 1st Brig.). The report notes the capture of the colors from the 28th Virginia Regiment by Pvt. Marshall Sherman. The flag captured by Pvt. Sherman is held by the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1998, a group of reenactors from Virginia asked for (demanded?) the flag's return. The flag remains in Minnesota! Hurrah for the Union!
