Born of Desert Storm, the brainchild of Bobby Easton and "The Tie That Binds, Inc.", this proud unit of private vehicles has logged over 31,000 miles through 11 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada, providing escort to returning troops, Veteran support motorcades, POW - MIA Encampments and Vigils, and parades.
At the conclusion of Desert Storm, the "Flags" escorted home all the Connecticut Military units and one Vermont unit which took part in Desert Storm. The units were -
Charlie Co.,1st Bn., 25th Marines from N.Y./ Ct. line to Plainville Reserve Ctr., 344th Military Police, Army Reserve, from Ft.
Devens, Mass. To Hamden, 143rd Military Police, Ct. National Guard from Ft. Devens to Brainard Field, 142nd Medical Co.
two trips from Ft. Devens to New Haven via Plainfield and Uncasville, and one Vermont Military unit, 131st Engineers,
Vermont National Guard from Ft. Devens to Burlington, Vt.
After Desert Storm the "Flags" logged over 1000 hrs. during "Operation Patriot Home" at Westover A.F.B in Chicopee, Mass. welcoming home the troops, ferrying supplies, and doing what ever was needed.
The "Connecticut Rolling Flags, Inc." consists of vehicles, pickup trucks and vans, that fly full size American, Military, Allied, and POW - MIA flags from masts on their vehicles. This is all done to patriotic music provided by a sound system on the lead vehicle.
Since 1992 the "Flags" have escorted the POW - MIA Marathon Runners as they criss cross the State of Connecticut running the POW - MIA Flag from one Awareness Vigil to the next.
On May 16th & 17th, 1998, the "Flags" teamed up with the POW – MIA Marathon Runners and The Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southern Connecticut to sponsor the "Veterans’ Run For Jerry’s Kids". It was an 118 mile relay from the Rhode Island border (starting at 2:00am) and finishing at the New York border (10:30pm). A total of 118 miles in 18 ˝ hours, along Route 1, raising a little over $14,500 for the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon in the name of the 39 Connecticut residents still missing in Vietnam.
Way To Go Team!!
On August 20, 1999, the POW - MIA Marathon Runners passed the 1000 mile mark carrying the "POW - MIA Flag" from Vigil to Vigil in mostly the heat and humidity of summer. Way To Go Team!!
