Welcome!
In December 1947, the Marine Corps activated its
first helicopter squadron, HMX-1. Through more than fifty years of war and peace, Marine Helicopter squadrons, both active and reserve, have proudly served the nation. Some squadrons, like HMX-1, have long, distinguished histories; others were in existence for only a short time. This site is intended to honor all of them, and to commemorate their service. Training squadrons, as well as the H&MS/MALS squadrons are also here.
I have given the VMOs their own section, due to their unique position in Marine aviation history. Though they primarily operated fixed-wing aircraft throughout their history, VMO squadrons were also some of the earliest helicopter squadrons.
This site is dedicated to all the Marine helicopter squadrons,
past, present, and future. I hope you enjoy your visit, and
return often.
